ActiveCampaign is the Formula 1 of newsletter tools: not built for beginners, but for those who want to get the maximum out of marketing automation. With the most powerful workflow builder in the industry, an integrated CRM, machine learning-based predictive sending and more than 900 native integrations, ActiveCampaign sets the benchmark in customer experience automation. In our 100-point rating we examine whether the complexity is worth the price.

Highlights of our ActiveCampaign review

  • ActiveCampaign scores 81/100 points in our rating – our automation tip.
  • The most powerful workflow builder, with condition-based paths.
  • Machine learning: predictive sending and predictive content.
  • 900+ native integrations – only Mailchimp offers more.

1 Features & automation

32/32
Points
ActiveCampaign's automation is in a league of its own: the visual workflow builder allows unlimited nested conditions, if/then splits, goto actions and parallel paths. Automations can trigger one another – which enables meta-workflows that react to engagement patterns. Predictive content automatically shows each recipient the content most relevant to them – based on machine learning over past behaviour. Predictive sending optimises the sending time individually for each contact. Win probability scores forecast the likelihood of closing in the integrated CRM. The CRM is not lip service but full deal management with a pipeline view, automated lead assignment and opportunity scoring. A/B testing is comprehensive: subject lines, content, automation paths and even entire workflows can be tested against one another. Scoring (32/32): Full marks for the best marketing automation in the industry. Machine learning, CRM integration and workflow complexity are unsurpassed.

2 Deliverability & email infrastructure

15/18
Points
ActiveCampaign uses well-maintained shared IP pools with a strict anti-spam policy; kosten.org does not carry out its own deliverability measurements. SPF, DKIM and DMARC (email authentication standards) are fully supported, including BIMI support for logo display in the inbox. Dedicated IP addresses are available in the higher plans. Bounce handling is automatic, and the list hygiene tools are more advanced than at most competitors: engagement-based segments automatically filter out inactive contacts. The inbox preview shows the email in more than 20 mail clients. Transactional emails are available via Postmark (ActiveCampaign's sister company) or native SMTP integration. Scoring (15/18): Advanced list hygiene and BIMI support. A slight deduction because dedicated IPs are only available in higher plans.

3 GDPR & data protection

9/16
Points
ActiveCampaign is headquartered in the USA and operates servers primarily in the USA. Whether data can be held in the EU is something you should ask the sales team. A GDPR-compliant DPA (data processing addendum) is available; also check the certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Double opt-in is configurable but not active by default. The consent fields record consents, though in less detail than at CleverReach or rapidmail. The legal notice (Impressum) obligation for German emails has to be configured manually. For German companies in regulated sectors, ActiveCampaign is not the first choice because of its default US hosting. Scoring (9/16): DPA available. Clear deductions for default US hosting and the missing double opt-in as standard.

4 Integrations & ease of use

16/20
Points
ActiveCampaign offers more than 900 native integrations – the second most after Mailchimp. Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce, WordPress, Stripe, Facebook Custom Audiences, Google Ads and hundreds of other tools are seamlessly connected. The API is excellently documented and a dream for developers. The user interface is available in German but complex: the learning curve is the steepest in the comparison. The sheer number of features (automation, CRM, deals, messaging, site tracking) requires a familiarisation period of several days to weeks. Onboarding is wizard-assisted but not sufficient for the complexity of the tool. Reporting is data-driven: attribution reports, customer health scores, automation performance maps and revenue reports give deep insights into marketing effectiveness. The data visualisation is modern and exportable. Scoring (16/20): Outstanding integrations and the best reporting for data-driven teams. A clear deduction for the steep learning curve and the inadequate onboarding.

5 Price & plans

9/14
Points
ActiveCampaign has no free plan and bills in US dollars (as of October 2026, according to activecampaign.com): the Starter entry plan costs from $15 a month for 1,000 contacts with annual payment and already includes multi-step automation. Landing pages come from Plus (from $49 a month), predictive sending from Pro. ActiveCampaign shows prices for larger lists only in its price calculator; the pricing page does not state whether they are net or gross. As the list grows and with higher plans, ActiveCampaign quickly becomes expensive – but it is particularly strong on automation in return. Anyone who actually uses the advanced features gets an ROI that justifies the costs. For simple newsletter sending, however, ActiveCampaign is massively oversized. There is only a 14-day trial period to try it out. Enterprise prices are calculated individually. Scoring (9/14): A low-cost entry for the feature set on offer. Clear deductions for the missing free tier, dollar prices and the short 14-day trial.

Conclusion: ActiveCampaign review

81/100
Very good (1.9)

With 81 out of 100 points, ActiveCampaign is our automation tip: for data-driven marketing teams who want to get the maximum out of automation and CRM, it is a very strong choice – entry costs $15 a month (Starter, annual). For beginners and pure newsletter sending, however, ActiveCampaign is oversized.
