Etsy fees 2026: the real cost for sellers
Etsy is the world’s largest marketplace for handmade, vintage and creative products. But the fee structure is complex: there are at least three different fees on every sale – plus optional costs for Offsite Ads. In total, the overall cost is typically between 12% and 17%.
The three main fees
Every sale on Etsy is charged three fees: the listing fee (€0.18 per listing), the transaction fee (6.5% on price + shipping) and the payment processing fee (4% + €0.30 in Germany). Together that comes to at least 10.5% plus fixed costs.
Offsite Ads: mandatory or voluntary?
Etsy advertises your products on Google, Facebook and Instagram. If a buyer purchases through this advertising within 30 days, you pay 15% of the order value (including shipping, at most USD 100 per order) as an advertising fee. Once a shop has reached USD 10,000 in sales within a 365-day period, the rate drops permanently to 12%, but participation then becomes mandatory.
How to keep costs under control
Always build the fees into your selling price. On an item at €30 plus €5 shipping you keep only about €31 – so just under 89%. With Offsite Ads, your proceeds can fall below 75%. Offering free shipping sounds customer-friendly, but Etsy charges 6.5% on that, too.
Worked examples: what is left of €10, €35 and €100?
An item at €30 with €5 shipping gives a total of €35. On that you pay the listing fee of €0.18, the transaction fee of 6.5% (€2.28) and payment processing of 4% + €0.30 (€1.70). Together that is about €4.16, or 11.9%, leaving you roughly €30.84. On an item at €10 with €4 shipping it is €1.95 (13.9%), because the fixed parts of €0.18 and €0.30 weigh more heavily on small amounts.
Higher-priced items fare better in percentage terms: at €100 without shipping you pay €0.18 + €6.50 + €4.30 = €10.98, just under 11%. If Offsite Ads are added, the cost on the €35 order rises by €5.25 to €9.41 (26.9%), and you keep only about €25.60. The calculator above shows these differences live as you change the price, shipping and options.
Offsite Ads in more detail
The advertising fee only applies if a buyer purchases from you within 30 days of clicking an advertisement placed by Etsy. It is 15% of the order value including shipping, capped at USD 100 per order. In the calculator this cap is implemented as about €89, so very high-value orders are never charged more than that. An order of €700 would work out at €105 but is capped at €89.
The sales threshold is decisive: once your shop has reached USD 10,000 in sales within a 365-day period, the rate drops permanently to 12%, but participation then becomes mandatory. Shops below that threshold can switch Offsite Ads off. Work through both cases before you decide: on a thin margin 15% can eat up the entire profit on an order, while on high margins the reach may bring buyers you would never otherwise get.
Legal obligations for Etsy sellers in Germany
Anyone who sells regularly with the intention of making a profit is running a business and must register it with the local trade office. Occasionally selling private belongings, on the other hand, is not a business. Commercial sellers need a legal notice (Impressum) under section 5 of the German Digital Services Act (DDG), must give consumers a 14-day right of withdrawal under section 355 BGB, and must inform them of shipping costs and prices in line with the Price Indication Ordinance. For goods made to the customer's specification, such as personalised items, the right of withdrawal can be excluded under section 312g BGB.
Tax aspects come on top. Small businesses under section 19 UStG do not show VAT; since 2025 the limits are €25,000 in the previous year and €100,000 in the current year. Under the Platform Tax Transparency Act, platform operators such as Etsy must report seller data to the Federal Central Tax Office once more than 30 sales or more than €2,000 in proceeds are reached in a year. Anyone shipping packaged goods must also register in the LUCID packaging register under the Packaging Act and take part in a dual system.
How to price your items with Etsy fees in mind
Start from the proceeds you want and work backwards. If you want to keep €25 net, then without Offsite Ads you need a total of about €28.50: of that €28.50, €0.18 goes on the listing fee, €1.85 on the transaction fee and €1.44 on payment processing, leaving roughly €25.03. If you offer free shipping, build the shipping into the item price, because the transaction fee applies to both. Also review your prices after every fee change on Etsy's fee page.
Frequently asked questions about Etsy fees
At a minimum, about 10.5% plus €0.48 in fixed fees (6.5% transaction + 4% payment + €0.30 + €0.18 listing). With Offsite Ads (including currency conversion) it can exceed 28%. The average is 12–17%.
A listing costs €0.18 (USD 0.20) and stays active for 4 months. After that it is renewed automatically (another €0.18). When an item sells, the listing fee is also charged again for the automatic renewal.
Only if your annual sales are below $10,000. From $10,000 a year, participation in Offsite Ads becomes mandatory – although the fee then falls from 15% to 12%. The maximum fee per order is $100.
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee is calculated on the total amount – that is, item price plus shipping costs. Payment processing (4% + €0.30) is also based on the total amount including shipping.
With an item price of €30 plus €5 shipping you pay about €4.16 (11.9%) without Offsite Ads: €0.18 listing fee, €2.28 transaction fee and €1.70 payment processing. With Offsite Ads a further €5.25 is added, about €9.41 in total.
Anyone who sells regularly with the intention of making a profit is running a business and must register it. The overall picture counts, not turnover alone. If in doubt, ask the trade office or a tax adviser.
Under the Platform Tax Transparency Act, platform operators must report seller data to the Federal Central Tax Office. Sellers with fewer than 30 sales and less than €2,000 in proceeds in the calendar year are exempt. Regardless of the reporting, you are yourself obliged to declare your income.
