Spotify Free: what do you get for nothing?

The free version of Spotify is surprisingly extensive:

  • Full music catalogue: all 100+ million songs
  • Create playlists: build unlimited collections of your own
  • Podcast access: podcasts can also be heard for free (the podcasts themselves may contain ads)
  • Playback: Spotify has changed the controls in the free version several times; depending on the device there are restrictions on song selection

Restrictions of Free:

  • Ads every few songs (approx. 30 seconds)
  • No offline download
  • Limited skips per hour
  • Lower audio quality (160 kbps)

Suitable for: casual listeners who are not bothered by ads.

Spotify Premium: the classic for 12.99 €

The standard Premium plan (Premium Individual) for 12.99 euros a month offers:

  • No ads: music without interruption
  • Offline mode: download up to 10,000 songs
  • Play anything: play any song at any time
  • Highest quality: lossless audio up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz
  • Spotify Connect: control music on all devices

Cost calculation: 12.99 € a month or 155.88 € a year for unlimited access to the entire catalogue.

Spotify Duo: perfect for couples

For 17.99 euros per month, two people get:

  • Two separate Premium accounts
  • Individual recommendations and playlists
  • Shared “Duo Mix” playlist
  • Must live at the same address

Saving: 2 × Premium individually = 25.98 € → with Duo you save 7.99 €/month = 95.88 €/year.

The Family plan for 21.99 euros is the cheapest per head:

  • 6 Premium accounts for family members
  • Spotify Kids app for child-friendly content
  • Family Mix playlists
  • All must live at the same address

Money-saving tips for Spotify

  1. Share the Family plan: from 2 people, Family (21.99 €) is cheaper than two individual plans (25.98 €); Duo costs only 17.99 € for two people, though.
  2. Use trial promotions: Spotify occasionally offers new customers free or discounted trial months.
  3. Use student status: students at recognised universities are eligible (verification via SheerID).
  4. Use Free as an alternative: anyone who mainly listens to podcasts often gets by with the free version.
  5. Check bundle offers: some mobile providers include Spotify.

Audio quality: how good does Spotify sound?

Premium (very high)320 kbpsVery good

Note: lossless audio is now included in the Premium plan at no extra charge (according to spotify.com/de/premium, as of October 2026).

What does Spotify cost in the long run? A worked example

A subscription looks small but adds up. Premium Individual costs €12.99 a month, or €155.88 a year, and €779.40 over five years. The Student plan at €6.99 comes to €83.88 a year, which is €72 less. The Duo plan costs €17.99 a month; split between two users, each pays €8.995, or about €108 a year. With the Family plan at €21.99, each of six users pays about €3.67 a month, only €44 a year. Anyone who listens alone therefore pays the highest price per person. A family or flat-share plan pays off if everyone lives at the same address, as the terms of use require.

Data usage and offline listening

If you stream on the move, keep an eye on your data allowance. At 320 kbps, the highest classic quality level, about 2.4 MB per minute is used, roughly 144 MB per hour. Lossless files are considerably larger, so downloads over Wi-Fi make sense. With Premium, tracks can be saved for offline playback. For the downloads to stay valid, Spotify says the device has to go online regularly, at least every 30 days. On a trip without network access this can be a problem, so update your playlists in good time before a holiday.

Cancellation, trial month and consumer rights

Spotify Premium can be cancelled in the account settings; the Premium features continue until the end of the paid period, after which the account reverts to Spotify Free. Playlists and saved tracks are kept, only downloads and Premium features are lost. For online contracts, a provider must also offer an easily accessible cancellation button under section 312k of the German Civil Code (BGB). Trial months convert automatically into a paid subscription if you do not cancel in time, so note the end of the trial in your calendar. Spotify announces price changes in advance; if you disagree, you can cancel. For the Student plan, eligibility is re-checked regularly, and once you are no longer eligible the account is switched to a regular plan.

Which plan suits which situation?

Anyone who listens to a lot of music in the car or on the way to work benefits from offline mode, because no mobile data is used on the move. If you mainly follow podcasts, Free is often enough. Couples who share one account and constantly mix up recommendations are better off with Duo, because each keeps their own algorithm. In shared flats, Family is only permitted if everyone lives at the same address; Spotify may run spot checks. Decide based on actual use rather than on price alone, and review the subscription once a year.

Conclusion: which Spotify plan is worth it?

  • Casual listeners: Free is perfectly sufficient.
  • Individuals: Premium for 12.99 € is the standard.
  • Couples: Duo saves almost 8 € per month.
  • Families/flat shares: Family is cheapest per head from 3 users.
  • Students: 6.99 € for Premium is the cheapest paid plan.

Spotify remains the largest music streaming service in 2026 – not because of the price (rather at the upper end), but because of its superior user interface, algorithms and podcast integration.
