One domain costs €4 at one provider and €18 at the next – for exactly the same product. This comparison shows the actual annual costs of 16 registrars for 1945 TLDs, in euros and sorted by new-registration price by default.
First year or renewal – what to look out for
By default this comparison shows the price of a new registration for the first year – in other words, what you actually pay at checkout. If it is a limited-time offer, "Promo" appears above it and the regular list price below.
The second figure is the renewal price, and for long-term projects it often matters more: a .de for under €1 or a .shop for under €2 sounds great – but from year two the same .shop costs roughly €27 to €66 a year depending on the provider, and a .de at the big hosts €12 to €16. If you keep a domain for ten years, you pay the renewal price for nine of them. With the sort option at the top right you can switch the list to renewal prices at any time; the portfolio calculator works with renewal prices anyway.
Costs that are easy to overlook
- Setup fee – €0 at most providers, but some hosts still charge it on individual TLDs. It is shown in each provider's detail table.
- Transfer fee – moving to another registrar usually costs one year's fee, which extends the term by a year. For .de the transfer is often free.
- WHOIS privacy – included at Porkbun and OVHcloud, and domain privacy is also included at Dynadot; others charge extra for privacy. For .de domains the holder's details are not publicly available anyway.
- Restoration fee – if you miss the renewal, rescuing a deleted domain often costs many times the annual price, for example €89.25 for a .com at FORMALITY. Auto-renewal and an up-to-date email address on your customer account are therefore a must.
- Minimum term and notice period – many German hosts renew domains automatically for 12 months and require notice before the term ends, around 30 days at Domain-Offensive. If you plan to move, start the transfer well before the renewal date.
- VAT – we show the price the way the provider states it. The German providers and ACTIVE 24 charge including 19% VAT, for OVHcloud we add 19% to the net price, and the US registrars Dynadot and Porkbun show no German VAT. Whether VAT is added at their checkout depends on whether you order as a private individual or with a VAT ID – if in doubt, add 19%.
- Domain in a hosting package – many web hosting plans include a free domain. That is only cheaper if you need the hosting anyway.
Provider from Germany or abroad?
On price, US registrars such as Porkbun or Dynadot are almost always ahead – a .com costs around €10 a year there (excluding German VAT), compared with roughly €13 (febas, hosttech) to almost €29 (checkdomain) at German providers. In return, with STRATO, Domain-Offensive or checkdomain you get German-language support, invoices with VAT shown separately and German contract law.
If the provider's location matters to you, use the filter above to show only providers based in Germany, in the EU or outside the EU.
Technically, the registrar's location makes no difference to the domain itself: name servers, DNS and forwarding work the same everywhere. The registrar is just the administrative body.
How the prices are determined
Our own crawler reads the providers' price lists – directly from the public price interfaces at Porkbun, OVHcloud and Domain-Offensive, and from the price and domain pages for all other providers. Everything is then brought to a common basis:
- Monthly prices (e.g. at STRATO, IONOS or DomainFactory) are multiplied by 12 to give an annual price.
- If a provider quotes net prices plus VAT (OVHcloud), we add 19%.
- US dollars are converted to euros at the ECB reference rate. Dynadot has its own euro price list, which we take over directly.
- The US registrars Dynadot and Porkbun show no German VAT – their prices appear here exactly as they appear there.
The current data is from 14 September 2026. Providers change their prices without notice – check the price with the provider again before you buy.
