Amazon Prime Costs 2026: Is the Subscription Still Worth It?

Amazon Prime is far more than just a streaming service. With a combination of Prime Video, free delivery, unlimited photo storage and music streaming, Amazon offers an overall package that is unique worldwide in this form. But with the introduction of advertising in the standard plan at the start of 2024 and the last major price increase, many users are asking themselves: are the current Amazon Prime costs still justified? In this detailed guide we analyse all prices, benefits and ways to save (as of October 2026).

Current Prime prices at a glance

Amazon offers two main payment models for regular customers as well as heavily discounted terms for certain groups of people.

The advertising revolution: what does Prime Video really cost?

At the start of 2024 Amazon changed the rules. While Prime Video was included ad-free in the package for years, advertising is now included by default before and during films and series.

The two-tier model

  • Standard Prime (8.99 €): includes all Prime benefits, but video content is interrupted by ad spots (usually 2–3 minutes per hour).
  • Ad-free option (+2.99 €): anyone who does not want advertising has to book this option in addition. The total cost rises to 11.98 € per month.

Important: even with the ad-free option, live events (such as selected Champions League matches) still carry advertising, as this is technically delivered the same way to all users.

What is included in the Prime costs? (The 10 most important benefits)

Many users subscribe to Prime only for the films, but often overlook benefits they may be paying extra for elsewhere.

  1. Prime Video: access to award-winning originals such as “The Boys”, “Reacher” or “The Rings of Power”.
  2. Premium delivery: free next-day delivery (sometimes even same-day) on millions of items with no minimum order value.
  3. Amazon Music (Prime version): access to over 100 million songs and top podcasts ad-free in shuffle mode.
  4. Amazon Photos: unlimited storage for full-resolution photos plus 5 GB of storage for videos. A genuine competitor to Google Photos or iCloud.
  5. Gaming benefits: free games and in-game content for members (Amazon has renamed and restructured the offer several times; check the current scope on amazon.de).
  6. Prime Reading: free access to hundreds of e-books, magazines and comics via the Kindle app.
  7. Prime-exclusive deals: discount promotions that apply to members only (scope varies).
  8. Try Before You Buy: try on clothes first and pay only for what you keep.
  9. Exclusive access: earlier access to “lightning deals” and exclusive shopping events such as Prime Day.
  10. Delivery day of your choice: bundle your orders on a fixed weekday to save on packaging waste.

Prime Channels: hidden extra costs

A common misunderstanding is that with Prime you can watch everything on Prime Video. In fact, Amazon also acts as a platform for third-party channels:

  • Paramount+: costs approx. 7.99 € extra per month.
  • MGM+: focus on classic Hollywood movies (approx. 3.99 € extra).
  • Arthouse CNMA: for lovers of special films.
  • Eurosport Player: for sports fans.

These channels can be added individually and can usually be cancelled monthly. They often increase the Prime costs considerably, but offer maximum flexibility.

Is a Prime subscription worth it for young adults, students and trainees?

Since June 2025, everyone aged 18 to 22 in Germany has paid half price – regardless of whether they study, do an apprenticeship or work (according to Amazon’s press release of 16 June 2025).

  • The first 6 months: free trial membership.
  • After that: 4.49 € per month or 44.90 € per year.
  • Over 22: students and trainees still receive the reduced rate with proof (for example a university email address or certificate of enrolment), for up to five years in total.

Bonus for low earners: anyone who is exempt from the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) can also apply for the reduced price of 4.49 € a month with proof.

Technology and quality: UHD, Dolby Atmos and X-Ray

Amazon Prime Video is technically among the best.

  • Resolution: 4K Ultra HD is included in many titles at no extra charge (unlike Netflix, where you need the most expensive plan for it).
  • Audio: support for Dolby Atmos on selected titles.
  • X-Ray: an exclusive feature that displays actor biographies, background music and trivia during the film (powered by IMDb).

Price development and outlook

Historically, Prime started in Germany at 29 € a year (delivery only). Via 49 € and 69 €, the annual price has been 89.90 € since 2022. While costs are rising, Amazon keeps expanding the ecosystem. Amazon can be expected to bet even more on live sport in future (as it already does with the Champions League or ATP tennis in other countries), which could further justify the costs or possibly lead to another increase.

Money-saving tips for Prime users

  1. From monthly to annual plan: anyone who uses Prime permanently saves 17.98 € a year by paying once.
  2. Sharing within the household: via “Amazon Household” you can share your Prime delivery benefits and video content with one other person living in your household (without handing over your password).
  3. Pause instead of cancel: if you know you will be on holiday for a month, you can cancel Prime and simply reactivate it when you return.
  4. Amazon credit card: in the past there was cashback on Prime costs. Check current successor offers for Amazon users to save indirectly.

Conclusion: Amazon Prime costs in 2026

If you look at Amazon Prime purely as a streaming service, the 11.98 € (including ad-free) is comparable with Netflix. But if you order at least two parcels a month, use the unlimited photo storage and occasionally listen to music, the price of 8.99 € or 7.49 € (annual plan) is almost unbeatable.

Prime is no longer a niche product but a comprehensive all-round subscription. For heavy Amazon users it is a no-brainer; for pure video consumers a regular comparison with competitors is worthwhile.
