Video editing software 2026: the ultimate comparison

Video editing has changed fundamentally in recent years. What once required expensive equipment and years of experience can now be done in a few minutes, even by beginners, thanks to AI-powered software. Whether it is for TikTok, YouTube, Instagram Reels or professional film production, there is a suitable solution for every use case.

The market for video editing programs is more varied in 2026 than ever. From free tools such as DaVinci Resolve to professional solutions such as Final Cut Pro, each piece of software has its own strengths. In this comparison we set the programs and their current prices side by side and help you choose the right one for your needs.

Market overview 2026

Artificial intelligence is changing pricing models too: Filmora charges for many AI functions via monthly AI credits, InVideo has become a credit-based AI video generator, and Apple now also offers Final Cut Pro as part of the Apple Creator Studio subscription (€12.99/month or €129/year). If you want no running costs, DaVinci Resolve Studio (€245) and Final Cut Pro (€349.99) remain available as one-off purchases.

Beginner vs. pro: which software suits you?

Before you decide on video editing software, you should know your requirements well. The choice depends on several factors: your experience level, your budget, the features you want and the platform you are creating videos for.

For YouTubers and content creators

YouTube videos need more functionality than social media clips. Filmora by Wondershare has established itself as the gold standard for up-and-coming YouTubers. The program combines a simple interface with features such as multi-cam editing, motion tracking and a large effects library. At €49.99 per year (excl. VAT, i.e. roughly €59.49 gross), Filmora is also affordable.

For professional filmmakers

If you work at the highest level, one route stands out: DaVinci Resolve offers very powerful colour correction even for free and is widely used in film and TV post-production. Mac users can alternatively turn to Final Cut Pro (€349.99 one-off or via the Apple Creator Studio subscription).

The AI revolution in video editing

In 2026, artificial intelligence is the central topic in video editing. Almost all modern programs integrate AI features that were unthinkable before. These technologies not only save time but also deliver results that used to be within reach of professionals only.

The most important AI features at a glance

  • Automatic subtitles (speech-to-text): AI analyses spoken language and generates subtitles automatically. Movavi offers automatic subtitles in its Video Editor subscription, and DaVinci Resolve Studio has built-in transcription.
  • Background removal without a green screen: Modern algorithms detect people and remove backgrounds automatically – in Filmora, some of these AI functions are among the tools that use up credits.
  • Auto reframe for different formats: A video you have created once is automatically cropped for TikTok (9:16), YouTube (16:9) or Instagram (1:1). The AI recognises faces and keeps them in focus.
  • Text-to-video: Describe your video in text and the AI creates it automatically with suitable clips, music and animations. InVideo specialises in this feature, and Filmora offers “AI Text to Video” via AI credits.
  • AI voice cloning: Create realistic voiceovers without recording your own voice. Particularly useful for multilingual content.
  • Automatic colour correction: AI analyses your footage and adjusts colours, contrast and exposure automatically. DaVinci Resolve delivers the best results here.

Expert tip

AI-generated subtitles are not perfect. Always check automatically created text manually, especially for technical terms, names and dialects.

The top providers in detail

Filmora – the all-rounder for content creators

Wondershare Filmora is very popular with YouTubers and content creators. The software manages the balancing act between beginner-friendliness and professional features. Highlights are the AI-powered tools for music, speech and effects, plus the large library of templates and stock media. In the German shop, the Advanced annual plan costs €49.99, the perpetual licence €69.99 and the Premium annual plan €89.99 – each excl. VAT. The perpetual licence only receives updates for Filmora 16; the subscriptions include ongoing version upgrades and monthly AI credits.

InVideo – the browser solution

InVideo is aimed at online marketers and agencies. The fully browser-based solution requires no installation. The focus is on AI video creation: enter a prompt and InVideo automatically creates a video with clips, animations and music; a timeline editor allows post-editing. Billing is based on monthly credits (Starter 400, Plus 2,000, Max 8,000), and unused credits expire. Monthly, the plans cost €20, €60 and €250 per seat respectively; annual plans regularly come with discount promotions.

DaVinci Resolve – free professional power

DaVinci Resolve by Blackmagic Design offers editing, colour correction, professional audio tools (Fairlight) and VFX compositing (Fusion) even in the free version – without a watermark. The paid Studio version adds, among other things, Neural Engine AI functions, noise reduction, stereoscopic tools and advanced HDR colour correction; as a one-off purchase it costs €245 (RRP incl. VAT, currently reduced from €305). The downside: the learning curve is steep, and the software is resource-intensive.

Movavi Video Editor – simple for beginners

The Movavi Video Editor relies on a very simple timeline and one-click AI tools such as automatic subtitles and noise reduction. In the German shop it is available as a subscription: €18.95 for one month or €43.95 for one year (promotional price, regular price €63.95, each incl. VAT). A perpetual licence is not currently offered in the shop. The free version is only suitable for trying it out, as exports carry a watermark and are limited to 60 seconds of video.

Final Cut Pro – Apple’s Mac solution

Final Cut Pro only runs on the Mac (and as a separate version on the iPad). It is available as a one-off purchase for €349.99 in the Mac App Store or is included in the Apple Creator Studio subscription, which for €12.99 a month or €129 a year also includes Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion and Compressor (teachers and students: €2.99/month or €29/year). According to Apple, some premium content remains reserved for subscribers; if you have already bought Final Cut Pro, you will continue to receive updates.

Cost comparison: what you really pay

The pricing models of video editing software differ considerably. While some providers rely on subscription models, others offer perpetual licences or completely free versions.

Software Free version Annual cost* Perpetual licence
Filmora✅ With watermark€49.99 net (≈ €59.49 gross)€69.99 net (≈ €83.29 gross)

DaVinci Resolve✅ Full version without watermark€0€245 (Studio)
Final Cut Pro (Mac)⚠️ 30-day trial subscription (Creator Studio)€129 (Apple Creator Studio)€349.99

As of October 2026, manufacturer prices. Filmora shows shop prices excl. VAT (gross calculated at 19%); Movavi, Blackmagic Design and Apple show prices incl. VAT. ¹ InVideo with monthly payment; discount promotions are often running on the annual plan (October 2026: €10/month). VAT treatment not stated for InVideo.

Money-saving tip

Free software is enough for many use cases: the free version of DaVinci Resolve exports without a watermark. With Filmora and Movavi, on the other hand, the free version is only meant for trying out (watermark, plus a 60-second limit with Movavi). Invest in a paid version when you will really use convenience features, AI tools or team functions.

Cost example: what does video editing cost over three years?

Subscription or one-off purchase – the difference only shows over several years. Example calculation using the list prices of October 2026 (gross, incl. 19% VAT):

Software / model 1 year 3 years
DaVinci Resolve (free)€0€0
Filmora perpetual licence≈ €83.29≈ €83.29 (updates for Filmora 16 only)
Filmora Advanced annual plan≈ €59.49≈ €178.47
Movavi Video Editor (annual plan)€43.95 (promotion)up to €171.85 (regular €63.95 from year 2)*
DaVinci Resolve Studio€245€245
Final Cut Pro (one-off purchase)€349.99€349.99
Apple Creator Studio (annual plan)€129€387
InVideo Starter (monthly)€240€720

Filmora: manufacturer’s net prices + 19% VAT. *Movavi: assumes the subscription renews at the regular annual price after the promotional year – check the renewal price during checkout. InVideo: without discount promotions.

If you edit for longer than two to three years, a one-off purchase usually works out cheaper – provided the version still meets your needs in future. Subscriptions are mainly worthwhile if you continually need new AI features, stock media or cloud storage.

What to look for when buying

  • Net or gross: In the German shop, Filmora shows prices excl. VAT – 19% is added at checkout. Movavi, Blackmagic Design and Apple quote final prices incl. VAT.
  • What “perpetual licence” means: With Filmora, the perpetual licence only includes updates for the current major version (Filmora 16). New major versions are included in the annual plan.
  • AI credits: Many AI functions (e.g. text-to-video, text-to-speech, scene cuts) run on credit allowances in Filmora and InVideo. Once the allowance is used up, every further use costs extra; with InVideo, unused credits expire at the end of the month.
  • Promotional prices and renewal: Movavi and InVideo advertise discounts on the first year. What matters is the price at which the subscription renews automatically.
  • Platform: Final Cut Pro is only available for Mac and iPad, DaVinci Resolve also for Linux, and InVideo only in the browser. Check the manufacturer’s system requirements before buying.
  • Try the free version: Almost all providers offer a free version or a trial period (Apple Creator Studio: 30 days). Edit a real project with it before you pay.

System requirements: what your PC needs to handle

Video editing is computationally demanding. The requirements vary considerably depending on the software and project size.

Minimum requirements for desktop software

  • RAM: At least 8 GB, 16 GB recommended (32 GB for 4K)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 or better
  • Graphics card: Dedicated GPU with 4 GB VRAM recommended
  • Storage: SSD with at least 50 GB of free space

DaVinci Resolve is the most demanding and benefits greatly from a powerful graphics card. Filmora and Movavi also run satisfactorily on older systems. Browser-based tools such as InVideo have no local requirements – the server does the computing work.

Export formats and resolutions

All the programs compared support the common formats for social media and professional productions:

  • Full HD (1920x1080): Standard resolution for YouTube and most platforms
  • 4K UHD (3840x2160): Available in the desktop programs (Filmora: 4K export on the paid plans)
  • Vertical format (9:16): Optimised for TikTok, Reels and Shorts
  • MP4 with H.264/H.265: Universally compatible format with good compression
  • ProRes/DNxHR: Professional codecs in Final Cut Pro and DaVinci

Frequently asked questions about video editing

Which video editing software is really free and watermark-free?

Among the programs compared here, DaVinci Resolve is the professional software that can be used completely free and without a watermark. The free version includes editing, colour correction, Fairlight audio and Fusion effects; some AI and HDR functions are reserved for the Studio version (€245). Filmora and Movavi apply a watermark in their free versions.

What is the best video editing software for YouTube beginners?

For YouTube beginners we recommend Filmora (€49.99/year excl. VAT). The program offers an intuitive interface, plenty of tutorials and all the features YouTubers need: title animations, transitions, colour correction and audio editing. Alternatively, DaVinci Resolve is a good free option for getting started.

Do I need a gaming PC for video editing?

Not necessarily. For Full HD videos a modern mid-range PC with 8-16 GB of RAM is enough. 4K editing needs more power: 32 GB of RAM and a dedicated graphics card are recommended. Browser-based tools such as InVideo shift the computing work to servers and therefore also run on older laptops.

Which video editing program has the best AI features?

InVideo specialises in AI video creation from a text prompt and offers access to various AI video models. Filmora stands out with over 20 AI functions such as a music generator, text-to-video and intelligent scene cuts – paid for via AI credits. DaVinci Resolve Studio uses AI (Neural Engine) mainly for professional tasks such as tracking and noise reduction.

Can I edit videos on my phone?

Yes! Filmora has a mobile version for iOS and Android. For professional projects, however, we still recommend the desktop versions, as they offer more control and features.

How do I add automatic subtitles to my videos?

Almost all modern video editing programs offer automatic subtitling. Filmora offers “AI text-based editing” (via AI credits), Movavi automatic subtitles in the Video Editor subscription, and DaVinci Resolve Studio has a built-in transcription function. Always check automatically generated subtitles manually anyway.

Which is better: subscription or one-off purchase?

That depends on how you use it. Subscription models (e.g. InVideo) always give you the latest features and updates. One-off purchases (Filmora perpetual licence for €69.99 excl. VAT, DaVinci Resolve Studio for €245, Final Cut Pro for €349.99) pay off if you use the software over several years. For occasional users we recommend the free version of DaVinci Resolve.
