Driving Licence Costs 2026: What Does a Driving Licence Really Cost?

For many young people the driving licence (Führerschein) is the first big financial milestone. But what does a driving licence really cost in 2026? The answer is more complex than a single price, because the total cost is made up of many individual items – from registering at the driving school to the final test fee at TÜV. In this comprehensive guide we break down all the costs transparently and show you where you can save without skimping on safety.

Total costs at a glance: around 2,500 to 4,500 euros

According to a sample calculation by ADAC (the German automobile club), the cost of a class B (car) licence is between around 2,500 euros (lower prices, 15 practice lessons, everything passed first time) and a good 4,500 euros (upper prices, 25 practice lessons). This enormous range is explained by regional differences, individual learning speed and the choice of driving school.

Cost breakdown by item

Practice lessons (45 min each)approx. 55 – 77 € per lesson

The biggest cost drivers: driving lessons

By far the biggest cost factor is the practical driving lessons. While the 12 special drives required by law (5 × country roads, 4 × motorway, 3 × night driving) are fixed, the number of practice lessons needed varies widely.

  • Quick learners: around 10–15 practice lessons → approx. 550–1,150 €
  • Many learners: around 20–25 practice lessons → approx. 1,100–1,900 €
  • More practice needed: over 25 lessons → correspondingly more

(Calculated at 55–77 € per practice lesson, plus the twelve special drives.)

Money-saving tip: intensive courses (holiday driving schools) can reduce the number of lessons because what has been learned is not “forgotten” between individual lessons.

Regional price differences: city vs. countryside

Driving school prices in Germany differ massively by region:

In big cities and conurbations the price per lesson is usually at the upper end of the range, in rural regions rather at the lower end. There are no reliable nationwide price statistics by city – ask several driving schools for a written cost estimate.

Trick: if you live in a big city, you can consider taking your driving licence at a driving school in the surrounding area – with noticeably lower lesson prices, the journey can be worth it.

Hidden costs: what to watch out for

Many driving schools advertise low base fees but make the money back elsewhere. Watch out for:

  1. Teaching material costs: for books, online media and app access ADAC cites 88–119 €.
  2. Test presentation fees: the driving school charges its own flat fees for registering and accompanying you to the test – according to ADAC 60–137 € (theory) and 160–289 € (practical).
  3. Retake fees: if you fail a test, test fees (around 25 € theory, around 130 € practical) apply again, and as a rule the driving school’s presentation fee too.
  4. Code B197: anyone tested in an automatic car may also drive manual cars with B197 if they have completed at least ten driving lessons in a manual car and a test drive at the driving school – these lessons cost extra.

Financing your driving licence: these are the options

Not everyone can pay 3,000 euros in one go. There are several ways to finance it:

  • Instalment payments at the driving school: many driving schools offer interest-free instalments.
  • Employer subsidy: some employers (especially in logistics) subsidise the driving licence.
  • Job centre support: in case of unemployment, the driving licence can be funded as an integration measure.

Money-saving tips: how to reduce the costs

  1. Compare driving schools: get at least 3 quotes and compare not just the base fee but the estimated total price.
  2. Learn the theory consistently: use your driving school’s learning app regularly – anyone who passes the theory test first time saves the retake costs.
  3. Choose an intensive course: less idle time means fewer repeat lessons.
  4. Pass the tests first time: every retake costs time and money.
  5. Use special offers: many driving schools offer discounts for school pupils, students or early bookers.

The route to the driving licence is regulated in the Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV) and the Driving Instructors Act (Fahrlehrergesetz). The FeV sets out which training is compulsory, which tests must be taken and which deadlines apply. The Driving Instructors Act regulates the requirements for driving schools and instructors, including the written training contract and the duty to make prices transparent. The test fees themselves, by contrast, are set nationwide in the fee schedule for road-traffic measures (GebOSt), whereas the driving school calculates its prices freely. That is why test fees are similar everywhere, but lesson prices are not.

The minimum age for category B is 18. With accompanied driving from 17 (BF17), young people can take the test at 17 and may then drive with a named accompanying person. In cost terms this changes nothing, but it brings the expense forward. After passing, a two-year probationary period under the Road Traffic Act begins, in which offences can lead to retraining and an extension; misconduct then causes additional costs.

The route to the test: process and deadlines

The start is registration with a driving school under a training contract. In parallel, you apply to the driving licence office for the licence and submit an eye test, first-aid certificate and a biometric photo. The theory covers basic material and class-specific additional material, usually in a course or online with an app. The theory test at TÜV or DEKRA consists of 30 questions, with a maximum of ten error points allowed. A pass in the theory test remains valid for twelve months; within that time you must take the practical test, otherwise the theory has to be repeated.

Practical training runs in parallel, with practice lessons and the twelve special drives. The number of practice lessons needed is decided by the instructor according to your progress; there is no statutory minimum for ordinary practice lessons. After a failed test, the FeV allows a retake at the earliest after two weeks. Allow for that waiting time if you need the licence for a job or a place of study.

Worked example: total costs for an average course

A realistic calculation makes the range tangible. The starting point is mid-range values from the ADAC breakdown: basic fee 450 euros, learning materials 100 euros, 20 practice lessons at 65 euros each (1,300 euros) and the twelve special drives at 75 euros each (900 euros). Added to that are the driving school’s presentation fees of 100 euros for the theory and 220 euros for the practical test, the test fees of 25 and 130 euros, the first-aid course at 60 euros, the eye test at 7 euros, a passport photo at 10 euros and the application fee at 50 euros.

Altogether that makes 450 + 100 + 1,300 + 900 + 100 + 220 + 155 + 60 + 7 + 10 + 50 = 3,352 euros. That lies in the middle of the range of 2,500 to 4,500 euros and shows that lessons and special drives together account for more than two thirds of the costs. Anyone who has to retake the practical test pays an additional 130 euros test fee plus the driving school’s presentation fee of 160 to 289 euros, about 290 to 420 euros; for a repeated theory test it is about 85 to 160 euros. A buffer of 500 euros, as recommended above, usually covers one retake.

Choosing a driving school: what to check before you sign

Price alone says little. Before registering, ask for a written quote that itemises the basic fee, price per practice lesson, special drives, learning materials and the presentation fees for both tests. Also have it explained whether the learning materials are compulsory and how long online access remains valid. Check the training contract for clauses on termination, cancelled lessons and deadlines; advance payments should be as low as possible so that a large sum is not lost if you switch or the school becomes insolvent.

Organisation matters too: how flexible are lesson times? Are there fixed theory sessions or online teaching? How long are the waits for test dates? Long gaps between lessons often mean more lessons are needed because what was learned fades, which drives up costs. Online reviews can give a first impression but should not be the only deciding factor. A personal conversation and a trial lesson usually show better whether the teaching style suits you. If you change driving school, you are entitled to have your training records handed over; however, hours already completed are not always recognised.

Conclusion: what costs do you have to expect?

For a class B driving licence you should realistically expect around 2,500 to 4,500 euros in 2026 – depending on region and number of practice lessons. Allow a buffer of 500 euros for any extra lessons or a test retake.

A driving licence is an investment for life – but one that can be made considerably cheaper with good preparation and the right driving school comparison. Before signing up, get a written cost estimate from several driving schools in your region.
