Create AI images: 11 generators compared on price
From €3.42 to €16 per month – we compare the entry plans, free tiers and usage rights of the leading AI image generators. Prices are taken straight from the providers' websites, as of October 2026.
Find the right generator
All 11 providers handle text-to-image and image-to-image, so as filters they would be useless. Only the features that genuinely set the tools apart are listed here.
AI image generators compared
Sorted by the cheapest paid plan, converted to a monthly amount – for providers with an annual plan, the monthly amount when billed annually applies (shown under the price). USD and EUR amounts are set side by side 1:1, because the exchange rate changes constantly.

Vectors are the big gap
Only 2 of the 11 providers output genuine SVG files: Recraft and Adobe Firefly. If you need a logo that is equally sharp on a business card and on the side of a building, you have practically no choice.
Text in images remains a specialist discipline
Only 4 providers manage to set lettering without errors reliably – above all Ideogram, which was built for exactly this, and ChatGPT. The others regularly produce letter soup and made-up words.
Midjourney is the special case
Midjourney is the only provider in the comparison without a public API, and its terms of service prohibit automation. It also cannot cut out backgrounds – for that you need a second service.
Information based on the providers' websites and documentation, as of October 2026. The feature set of AI tools changes quickly: in 2026 getimg.ai dropped inpainting and the training of custom models, and Recraft's upscaler removes existing transparency.
What does it cost to create AI images?
The entry barrier is lower than many expect: if you only need an image now and then, the free tiers of Google Gemini, ChatGPT or Playground will do. If you work regularly, you pay between roughly five and twenty euros or dollars a month, depending on the provider. There is no ceiling at the top – Midjourney Mega costs $120, getimg.ai Ultra €210 and Adobe Firefly Premium as much as €219.98 per month.
The three hidden cost traps
First, VAT. Almost all US providers quote net prices. The advertised $10 for Midjourney Basic becomes around $11.90 once German VAT (Umsatzsteuer) of 19% is added. Recraft states this explicitly. If your credit card also charges a foreign-currency fee of one to two per cent, the amount you actually pay each month is noticeably above the list price.
Second, expiring allowances. Midjourney does not count in images but in Fast GPU hours – and unused time expires at the end of the month instead of rolling over. If you buy extra compute time, you pay $4 per hour; these extra hours expire after 60 days and are non-refundable.
Third, usage rights. A free plan is of little use if you are not allowed to use the images. On Recraft's Free plan all images are publicly visible and commercial use is excluded. On Ideogram, private generation is only possible from the Plus plan. Midjourney offers Stealth Mode, which keeps images private, only from the Pro plan at $60 a month – and companies with more than a million dollars in annual revenue have to book at least Pro anyway.
Worked example: what does a single image cost?
Because almost all providers bill in credits, the monthly price alone says little. Some providers convert their allowance into images on their own pricing page – which gives a rough price per image (entry plan with annual billing in each case, as of October 2026):
| Plan | Price/month | Allowance | ≈ images according to provider | ≈ per image |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Krea Basic | $5 | 5,000 units | ~112 (Nano Banana 2) | ~$0.04 |
| Ideogram Plus | $15 | 2,400 priority credits | 400 (model 4.0, 6 credits per image) | ~$0.04 |
| Playground Pro | $12 | 150 credits | 150 (1 credit per image) | $0.08 |
| getimg.ai Entry | €16 | 8,000 credits | ~114 (Nano Banana 2) | ~€0.14 |
| Fotor Pro | €3.42 | 100 credits | ~6 (Nano Banana Pro) | ~€0.57 |
The calculation shows that the lowest monthly price is not automatically the cheapest image. Fotor is the cheapest plan on an annual subscription, but with the demanding Nano Banana Pro model it delivers only a handful of images. If you need lots of motifs, you are considerably better off with Krea, Ideogram or Playground. Ideogram also allows unlimited slower “Slow” generations. The figures are rules of thumb: depending on model, resolution and post-processing, an image uses considerably more or fewer credits.
Which tool suits which purpose?
For text in images – posters, social media graphics, logo drafts – Ideogram is the obvious choice because it renders lettering more reliably than the competition. For true vector graphics that scale without limit, there is Recraft, which outputs SVG files instead of pixel images. For product photos in an online shop, Photoroom is the specialist: cut-outs, backgrounds and batch editing instead of free-form art.
For an artistic look, Midjourney is still the best-known name, running version V8.2 by default since 24 July 2026. If you already use Photoshop or Illustrator, Adobe Firefly is the smoothest option, since generation sits right in the familiar interface. And if you only need images as a side dish to text and research, ChatGPT or Gemini covers that in a single subscription.
A market that moves fast
While researching this comparison it became clear how short-lived offers are in this market. Freepik AI now trades as Magnific. Ideogram has replaced its classic free plan with pay-as-you-go plus weekly free credits for eligible accounts. With V8.2, Midjourney replaced character and omni reference with a new Edit Model. OpenAI has introduced “Go”, a budget tier that may contain ads, Google a new entry class with “AI Plus” at €4.99, and Adobe Firefly has grown to four paid tiers plus a free one.
That argues against long commitments: the annual discount of 20 to 40% is tempting, but only makes sense if you already know the tool and are sure you will use it for twelve months. For anything you are trying out for the first time, a monthly plan is the cheaper insurance against switching providers.
What we do not rate
We deliberately excluded image-quality rankings from this comparison, as there is no objective, verifiable yardstick for them – the result depends heavily on the subject and the prompt. Nor do we make statements about server locations or GDPR (DSGVO) compliance as long as providers give no reliable information on them. The oft-cited advantage that Adobe Firefly is “trained exclusively on legally safe content” can also no longer be substantiated in that blanket form: Firefly now integrates partner models from Google, OpenAI and FLUX.
Frequently asked questions
On paper the cheapest is Fotor: the Pro plan costs €40.99 a year, or about €3.42 a month – but only with an annual commitment and with just 100 AI credits a month. Without a commitment, Google AI Plus at €4.99 a month is the cheapest paid plan, followed by ChatGPT Go at €8. Krea costs $5 billed annually, or $9 monthly. The free tiers are cheaper still: 9 of the 11 providers compared can be used free of charge indefinitely, though with limits and in some cases without commercial usage rights.
Yes. Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Playground, Krea, Recraft, Photoroom, Fotor and Adobe Firefly have permanent free tiers, and Ideogram gives eligible accounts weekly free credits. The small print is what matters: on Recraft, free images belong to the provider, are public and may not be used commercially; on Ideogram, free images are also public. Playground expressly allows commercial use even on the free plan, and Krea also lists the commercial licence on its Free plan card.
Like most US providers, Midjourney quotes net prices. When you buy from Germany, the payment processor Stripe adds 19% VAT (Umsatzsteuer) – so $10 becomes roughly $11.90. Depending on your credit card, a foreign-currency fee of 1 to 2% may come on top. If you pay annually, you pay $96 a year ($8 a month) plus VAT. More in our article on Midjourney costs.
That depends on the provider and the plan. getimg.ai grants commercial use on its cheapest paid plan, Playground even on the free plan. According to its own FAQ, Ideogram claims no ownership of the images and permits any use, including commercial use. On Recraft it is expressly excluded on the Free plan and only allowed from Basic. At Midjourney, companies with annual revenue above US$1 million must book the Pro or Mega plan. Always check the terms of use before your first commercial use – they change frequently in the AI market.
With most providers yes, but the details differ. Recraft states explicitly that images from a paid subscription remain private and owned by the user after cancellation – commercial rights included. Midjourney allows free use as long as you have held a subscription at some point. The reverse case matters: if you created an image on the free plan, a later subscription does not automatically give you the rights to it, for example at Recraft, where free images belong to the provider.
On paper, yes: Midjourney, Playground and Recraft give 20% off, getimg.ai 29%, Ideogram up to 33% and Krea as much as 40%. At Fotor the annual plan costs less than half of twelve monthly payments. But bear in mind how fast the market turns – in 2026 Freepik AI was renamed Magnific, Ideogram reworked its free plan and Midjourney replaced key features. For a tool you do not know yet, the monthly plan is the safer choice.
With text-to-image you describe a subject in words and the AI creates it from scratch. With image-to-image you upload an existing image that serves as a template – the AI changes style, level of detail or individual elements but keeps the basic composition. All 11 providers compared can do both, so it is not a useful selection criterion. The real differences lie in post-processing: reference images, inpainting, background removal and vector export.
You need a reference image, which the AI takes as a template for a face or style. In Midjourney the --sref parameter controls style; with version 8.2 Midjourney replaced the earlier character reference (--cref) and the omni reference with a new Edit Model. Ideogram advertises unlimited character consistency on its paid plans, Adobe Firefly has dedicated upload fields for references, and ChatGPT picks up an uploaded person straight from the chat. In total 9 of the 11 providers support reference images. If you want to fix a character permanently, a custom LoRA model takes you further – offered by Krea, Recraft and Adobe Firefly.
Ideogram has specialised in exactly this and renders lettering much more reliably than most competitors – handy for posters, social media graphics and logo drafts. For genuine vector logos that scale without limit, Recraft is the better choice because it outputs SVG files rather than pixel images.
