How to use the cost calculators properly
Each calculator on this page answers a single question: what will this specifically cost me? To do so, the calculators work with published prices, fee tables and statutory fee schedules. For tax advisers the Tax Adviser Fee Ordinance (StBVV) applies, for notary and land registry the Court and Notary Costs Act (GNotKG), for debt collection costs the Lawyers' Remuneration Act (RVG), and for online selling the providers' own fee pages. The inputs are deliberately simple: you enter quantity, price or vehicle details and immediately get an estimate you can compare with quotes.
With every input, check whether an amount is meant gross or net. Consumers usually calculate with prices including VAT, whereas fees for businesses, such as at eBay or notaries, are often quoted net with VAT added on top. The note under each result states the date of the price data, usually October 2026, and the source. If tariffs change, compare the result once more with the provider's quote before you decide.
Which calculators exist and what they are for
The calculators cover several areas of life. For the car, the MOT-style inspection calculator, the registration calculator, the fuel cost calculator, the EV charging cost calculator, detailing and wrapping help with budgeting. For the home there are calculators for electricity, water, solar PV, house clearance and the costs of buying property. If you run a business or an online shop, you will find calculators for tax adviser and debt collection costs and for the fees of PayPal, Stripe, Etsy, eBay and Shopify.
The benefit is clearest with online selling fees: percentages and fixed amounts are hard to compare in your head, because the fixed fee dominates on small amounts and the percentage on large ones. The calculator reveals both parts and shows the total burden as a percentage. For statutory costs, such as a tax adviser's, the calculation mainly helps you check a quote for plausibility and ask the right follow-up questions.
Limits of the calculation and typical sources of error
A calculator can only be as accurate as its inputs. Prices vary by region and over time: water and wastewater prices differ from municipality to municipality, registration offices charge different administrative fees, and workshops price freely. The values shown are therefore guide figures for budgeting, not binding quotes. Special terms, discounts or individual agreements can move the result up or down.
A common source of error is forgetting ancillary costs. When buying property, further items come on top of notary and land registry; with online selling, the payment fee comes on top of the selling commission; with advertising, additional ad costs apply. The notes under the calculators state what is included and what is not. Equally important is to calculate with realistic quantities. Anyone who sets their electricity consumption too low or their sales volume too high gets a flattering result.
Calculate, compare, decide
It is best to proceed in three steps. First, calculate the cost of your starting position with realistic values. Second, change individual inputs to see which factor has the greatest influence, such as vehicle size for wrapping or basket size for payment fees. Third, obtain two or three quotes and compare them with the result. If a quote deviates strongly, that is a reason to ask what is included.
All calculators are free, work without registration and do not store your inputs. Most calculators come with detailed guide texts containing worked examples, frequently asked questions and the legal background. They are a good addition if you want to understand not just a number but also the reasons behind it. In the blog you will also find cost analyses on many everyday topics that compare providers' prices and explain pitfalls.
Where the figures come from and how current they are
We base the calculators on sources anyone can check: laws and fee schedules, providers' price lists, and publications from authorities and associations. For provider fees, such as those of PayPal, Stripe, Etsy, eBay or Shopify, the provider's own fee page is authoritative, because prices there can change without advance notice. For statutory fees such as those of notaries or tax advisers, it is the current text of the law. Under each result, every calculator states the date and basis of the values used, so that you can follow the calculation.
If you notice a discrepancy, for example a changed tariff or a fee rate that the provider now states differently, we would welcome a note. The calculators replace neither legal nor tax advice, but they provide a reliable basis for your planning and for conversations with providers, workshops and advisers.
