ChatGPT Costs 2026: All Prices for Go, Plus, Pro and Business

ChatGPT has revolutionised the way we work, learn and get creative. But while the basic version remains free, many users ask themselves: is ChatGPT Plus worth it? And what does professional use cost for teams and companies? In this guide we explain all of OpenAI’s pricing models (as of October 2026) and help you find the right subscription for your needs.

OpenAI changes models and limits frequently. You can find the exact benefits per plan in the AI chatbot comparison and at openai.com/chatgpt/pricing.

ChatGPT Free: what do you get for nothing?

The free version of ChatGPT is surprisingly capable and entirely sufficient for many users:

  • Model: current standard model, a smaller model once the limit is reached
  • Usage: limited number of messages, uploads and images
  • Features: text generation, image analysis, basic coding help, web search
  • Restrictions: tight limits and a small context window; reasoning functions and Deep Research only to a limited extent

Suitable for: occasional users, students, first experiments with AI.

ChatGPT Plus: the premium version for power users

For 23 euros per month (in the USA 20 US dollars plus tax) you get:

  • Higher limits: significantly more messages than in Free and Go
  • Reasoning models and Deep Research: for complex tasks and research
  • Image generation: directly in the chat
  • Advanced data analysis: upload files, complex evaluations
  • Custom GPTs: create and use specialised AI assistants
  • Web search: real-time internet search

Is Plus worth it? If you use ChatGPT daily for work, study or creative projects, the 23 euros quickly pay for themselves through time saved.

ChatGPT Business: for small to medium-sized teams

The Business version (formerly “Team”) costs 26 euros per user per month, or 21 euros when paid annually, from two users, and offers:

  • All Plus features for every team member
  • Admin dashboard: user management and access rights
  • Higher usage limits: more messages per day
  • Workspace isolation: company data is not used for training
  • Shared custom GPTs: share in-house AI assistants within the team

Suitable for: agencies, start-ups, marketing teams, small businesses.

ChatGPT Enterprise: for large corporations and compliance

Enterprise is the company version with individual pricing:

  • Highest usage limits of the business plans
  • SSO (single sign-on): integration into corporate IT
  • SOC 2 compliance: meets strict security standards
  • Dedicated support: a personal contact at OpenAI
  • Analytics dashboard: usage statistics for the whole company

Prices: negotiated individually; OpenAI does not publish prices for this.

OpenAI API: costs for developers

Anyone who wants to integrate OpenAI models into their own applications pays by usage via the API – billed per million tokens, separately for input and output, in US dollars net. Prices differ by many times depending on the model: small models cost cents per million tokens, the most powerful reasoning models many times that. Because OpenAI changes models and prices frequently, we do not quote individual prices here – the pricing page openai.com/api/pricing is authoritative. The API is independent of the ChatGPT subscription: a Plus subscription does not include any API credit.

Alternatives to ChatGPT Plus

Not everyone needs the OpenAI ecosystem. Strong alternatives are:

  • Claude Pro (Anthropic): $20/month net, $17 when paid annually
  • Google AI Plus / Google AI Pro: from 4.99 €/month – deep Google integration
  • Microsoft 365 Single with Copilot: 10 €/month – for Office users
  • Perplexity Pro: research with source citations (check the price at perplexity.ai)

What a subscription really costs over a year

Monthly prices look harmless but add up. A year of ChatGPT Go at 8 euros a month costs 96 euros, a year of Plus at 23 euros a month costs 276 euros. The highest Pro tier at 510 euros a month comes to 6,120 euros a year, the smallest Pro tier at 103 euros to 1,236 euros. On the Business team plan, two users on monthly billing pay 52 euros a month together, or 624 euros a year; with annual payment it is 2 × 21 euros × 12 = 504 euros. The saving per user is therefore 5 euros a month or 60 euros a year, in return for committing for twelve months.

What matters is the comparison with the benefit. Anyone who uses ChatGPT only two or three times a week for short questions pays, in effect, more than 20 euros per day of use with Plus and is usually better off with Free or Go. Anyone who drafts texts, analyses spreadsheets or reviews code every day, on the other hand, saves more than the subscription costs after only a few hours saved per month. A simple test: for four weeks, note how often you hit the limits of the free version. If it never happens, you do not need a subscription.

Cancellation, billing and platform prices

ChatGPT subscriptions run as continuing contracts with automatic renewal. Where you cancel depends on where you subscribed: subscriptions booked on the OpenAI website are managed in your account settings, while those taken out through the App Store or Google Play must be ended there. Deleting the app does not end a subscription. For consumer contracts concluded online, German law (section 312k of the Civil Code) requires an easy-to-find cancellation option; even so, check shortly after cancelling that the confirmation email has arrived.

Note also that prices can differ by channel: app stores may build their platform fees into the price, and taxes are shown differently from country to country. The amounts in this article are the euro prices including VAT as OpenAI states them for Germany. The amount shown at checkout is always the binding one. Consumers in principle also have a statutory right of withdrawal for digital services, but it can lapse once performance has begun with your consent; read the notes in the order step.

Data protection and data use

With chatbots, the question beyond price is what happens to your input. Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), personal data may only be processed with a legal basis, and you should not enter sensitive information about third parties, such as clients’ health data or an employer’s confidential documents. In the settings of the consumer plans you can control whether conversations may be used to improve the models; you should check this option deliberately. For Business and Enterprise, OpenAI states that company data is not used for training by default.

For self-employed people and companies this means: if you use ChatGPT for work, clarify internally which data may be entered and, where personal data is involved, check a data processing agreement. That is an argument for Business rather than Plus, even though the price is higher. If you claim invoices as a business expense, you also need a proper receipt; whether and with what VAT breakdown one is available can be seen in your customer account.

Finding the right plan in four steps

Instead of deciding by feature list, a pragmatic approach helps. Start with the free version and watch what you actually use the AI for. Three questions are decisive: how often do you hit message or upload limits? Do you need the reasoning models or Deep Research for your tasks? And do you work with data that should sit in a protected workspace?

Then step up only one tier, and on a plan you can cancel monthly. After one or two months you will see whether the price pays off. Only then is annual payment worth considering, if the provider offers it. A comparison with competitors can also be worthwhile, because many providers have similar price tiers but different strengths, for example in research, programming or integration with office software. Since models and limits change constantly, you should review the decision about every six months.

Conclusion: which ChatGPT subscription is right?

  • Occasional users: ChatGPT Free is perfectly sufficient.
  • Occasionally more needs: ChatGPT Go for 8 €/month, if ads do not bother you.
  • Power users: ChatGPT Plus for 23 €/month.
  • Teams: ChatGPT Business from two users.
  • Companies: Enterprise for compliance requirements.

The AI landscape keeps developing rapidly. Keep an eye on price developments – competition from Claude, Gemini and open-source models means constantly new plans – a price comparison is worthwhile regularly.
