Points

Mailchimp is the industry standard in email marketing – and not without reason. With more than 13 million users worldwide, more than 300 native integrations and an AI-assisted content assistant, Mailchimp offers the most extensive range of features of all the newsletter tools in the comparison. Since the takeover by Intuit in 2021, the platform has been greatly expanded. For German users, however, the GDPR issue remains a serious matter. In our 100-point rating we examine how Mailchimp performs overall.

Highlights of our Mailchimp review

  • Mailchimp scores 80/100 points in our rating – the widest range of features.
  • 300+ native integrations – by far the most in the comparison.
  • The AI Content Optimizer creates and optimises emails automatically.
  • Customer Journey Builder for the most complex automation workflows.

1 Features & automation

30/32
Points
Mailchimp sets the benchmark for range of features: the drag-and-drop editor is the most modern in the comparison, with AI-assisted content generation, dynamic content and a Brand Kit that automatically picks up colours, fonts and logo. More than 100 designed templates are available, plus a template builder for your own designs. The Customer Journey Builder is the most mature automation solution in the comparison: complex branching, A/B splits within workflows, SMS integration and website tracking allow campaigns that react automatically to the behaviour of each contact. Predictive segmentation uses AI to identify the contacts most likely to buy. A/B testing is comprehensive: subject lines, content, send time and even entire workflows can be tested. Send Time Optimization automatically chooses the optimal sending time for each individual recipient. Scoring (30/32): The most extensive range of features, with AI features and the best editor. A minimal deduction because some AI features are still in beta and occasionally deliver inconsistent results.

2 Deliverability & email infrastructure

16/18
Points
Mailchimp has one of the most established email infrastructures in the world; kosten.org does not carry out its own deliverability measurements. SPF, DKIM and DMARC (email authentication standards) are fully supported, and Mailchimp's own compliance department actively monitors the reputation of the shared IP pools. Whether dedicated IP addresses are available, and at what price, you should check with the provider for the plan you want. Mandrill (Mailchimp's transactional email service) is available as an add-on. The Content Optimizer has a hidden strength: it analyses the email content before sending and gives recommendations for improving deliverability – for example avoiding certain spam trigger words or the optimal text-to-image ratio. Scoring (16/18): An established delivery infrastructure with proactive reputation monitoring. A slight deduction because transactional emails (Mandrill) cost extra.

3 GDPR & data protection

8/16
Points
This is Mailchimp's biggest weakness for the German-speaking countries: the servers are in the USA. Since the Schrems II ruling and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework there has been a legal basis for the data transfer, but the long-term stability of that arrangement is disputed. Mailchimp offers standard contractual clauses (SCC) and a DPA (data processing agreement). Double opt-in is configurable but not enabled by default – a potential trap for German users who forget to change the setting. The unsubscribe function meets the legal requirements, but automatic templates for the German legal notice (Impressum) obligation are missing. For companies in regulated sectors (finance, health) or those seeking maximum GDPR certainty, Mailchimp is a risk factor because of its US server location. CleverReach or rapidmail are the safer alternatives here. Scoring (8/16): DPA available and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework as the legal basis. Clear deductions for US servers, no double opt-in as standard and no German legal notice templates.

4 Integrations & ease of use

18/20
Points
Mailchimp is unrivalled for integrations: more than 300 native integrations cover practically every CRM, shop, CMS and analytics platform. Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, WordPress, Salesforce, HubSpot, Google Analytics, Facebook Ads – everything seamlessly connected. The API is the best documented in the industry. The user interface is available in German and modern in design. The learning curve is moderate: basic functions are intuitive, but the advanced features (customer journeys, predictive analytics) take some getting used to. Tutorials and the Mailchimp Academy help with learning. Reporting is the most extensive in the comparison: real-time dashboards, revenue attribution, comparative reports, subscriber engagement scores and social media performance – all visualised in clear charts. Scoring (18/20): Unrivalled variety of integrations with 300+ partners and the best reporting. A minimal deduction for the time needed to get to grips with advanced features.

5 Price & plans

8/14
Points
Mailchimp's pricing model is based on the number of contacts and gets expensive for large lists (as of October 2026, according to mailchimp.com): the Free plan allows only 250 contacts and 500 emails a month, without automation and with Mailchimp branding. The Essentials plan starts at €11.77 a month for 500 contacts; Mailchimp shows prices for larger lists and the Standard and Premium plans only through its price calculator. The pricing page does not state whether prices are net or gross. For comparison: at Brevo, 10,000 contacts with two newsletters a month cost €28. As the list grows, by contrast, the Mailchimp price rises step by step with each contact limit. Mailchimp justifies the prices with the most extensive feature set, the most integrations and the AI tools. For small businesses with up to 2,000 contacts the value for money is acceptable; for growing lists, Mailchimp quickly becomes the most expensive tool in the comparison. Scoring (8/14): Extensive features, but a very tight Free plan. A clear deduction for the high costs as lists grow and the tiered prices being viewable only via the price calculator.

Conclusion: Mailchimp review

80/100
Very good (2.0)

Mailchimp scores 80 out of 100 points and offers the widest range of features – but not the best GDPR position. The 300+ integrations, the AI editor and the reporting are unsurpassed; Essentials costs from €11.77 a month. For German companies that value data protection, we recommend CleverReach or rapidmail as alternatives.
