Bitvavo is a Dutch crypto exchange with MiCA authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider, granted by the supervisor AFM on 27 June 2025. We examined Bitvavo under our crypto methodology: trading costs, security and regulation, offer, platform, and taxes and reporting. A rating under the depot methodology would be irrelevant, because Bitvavo does not trade securities.

Highlights of our Bitvavo review

  • Bitvavo scores 91 out of 100 points in our rating and is thus the best-rated crypto exchange in our comparison.
  • MiCA authorisation from the Dutch AFM dated 27 June 2025, also registered with De Nederlandsche Bank.
  • Around 98 percent of holdings in cold storage, insurance cover up to US$255 million and a quarterly, externally audited proof of reserves.
  • Taker fee 0.25 percent and maker fee 0.15 percent in the entry tier, SEPA deposits and withdrawals free.

1 Trading costs

26/30
Points
Bitvavo works with a volume-dependent scale that, in the entry tier up to €100,000 of 30-day volume, is at 0.15 percent maker and 0.25 percent taker and falls in steps to 0.04 percent maker and 0.08 percent taker (as of 09/2026). The USDC market has its own, lower fee scale; stablecoin pairs do not count towards the 30-day volume of the euro scale. Savings plan executions are billed at the normal trading fee, with no surcharge for automation. Bitvavo is an order-book trading venue, so the spread is visible at all times and, for the liquid euro pairs, is well below 0.5 percent; there is no additional broker spread priced in. On payment methods, no fees apply either to SEPA deposits or to withdrawals in euros to a verified bank account; instant bank transfer and Apple Pay are also free. Scoring (26/30): The taker fee of 0.25 percent is in the up-to-0.25-percent level and gives 11 out of 15 points – the full score requires 0.15 percent or less. The spread shown in the order book, below 0.5 percent, brings the full 8 points, and free SEPA deposits and withdrawals the full 7 points.

2 Security & regulation

28/28
Points
Bitvavo received the CASP licence under MiCA from the Dutch Autoriteit Financiële Markten on 27 June 2025 and is also registered with De Nederlandsche Bank. Authorisation for the German market is thus verified via the MiCAR rules. Custody is the strongest point in our rating. Around 98 percent of holdings are in cold storage, secured by multi-signature technology and insurance cover of up to US$255 million. Client funds are held separately, and Bitvavo publishes quarterly a proof of the crypto assets held, reviewed by an independent audit firm. At account level there is two-factor authentication for all accounts, a whitelist for withdrawal addresses, IP-based restriction of API access, automatic session expiry and an anti-phishing code carried in every email. Scoring (28/28): The AFM's MiCA authorisation gives the full 12 points. Cold storage, separate custody and a published, externally audited proof bring the full 10 points. Two-factor authentication, address whitelisting and withdrawal locks give the full 6 points.

3 Offer

18/18
Points
With around 449 listed cryptocurrencies, Bitvavo is among Europe's largest trading venues and covers, besides Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano and Polkadot, numerous smaller altcoins. As a Dutch euro trading venue, assets are quoted directly against euros, with no detour via dollar stablecoins needed. On additional products, there is a savings plan under the recurring purchases function with a weekly, fortnightly or monthly interval, starting from €5. Staking is offered in a flexible and a fixed variant; yields range from single-digit rates on established coins to much higher values on smaller altcoins. Scoring (18/18): Around 449 tradable crypto assets give the full 8 points. Consistent euro trading brings the full 5 points. Savings plan and staking together give the full 5 points.

4 Platform & usability

12/14
Points
The web interface, app and help section are available in German, the app is available for iOS and Android, and with an entry threshold from €5 it is designed for beginners. According to the provider, verification is quick. The range of orders is unusually broad for a retail exchange: besides market orders, limit orders are available in the variants good-til-canceled, fill-or-kill and immediate-or-cancel, as well as stop-limit and stop-loss-market orders and OCO orders, with which two orders can be made mutually exclusive. On availability, things look less good: outage monitors count around 20 incidents for Bitvavo, of which several were open at the time of the survey and six related to deposits or withdrawals. Scoring (12/14): A German-language interface plus apps for both systems give the full 6 points. The broad range of orders brings the full 4 points. For availability we award 2 out of 4 points, because documented individual disruptions rule out the full score.

5 Taxes & reporting

7/10
Points
Bitvavo does not provide a finished tax report of its own for the German tax return. The provider supplies transaction overviews that can be imported into CoinTracking, Blockpit or Koinly; we regard this as a connection to tax tools, not a finished report. On export, Bitvavo is fully equipped. The transaction history is available as a CSV file, and there is also a documented REST API that can be connected to tax tools with read permissions. API access can be restricted via an IP whitelist. Scoring (7/10): For the tax report there are 3 out of 6 points, because Bitvavo supplies no finished document of its own. CSV export and API together give the full 4 points.

Pros & cons at a glance

Pros

  • Alongside Finst the cheapest fee scale in the rating field: 0.15 percent maker (the same as Finst's flat rate), 0.25 percent taker in the entry tier, much lower at high volumes
  • SEPA deposits and withdrawals as well as instant bank transfer and Apple Pay free
  • Around 98 percent cold storage, insurance up to US$255 million, quarterly audited proof of reserves
  • Around 449 crypto assets, all tradable directly in euros, savings plan from €5 and staking in two variants
  • Very broad range of orders up to OCO orders, German-language app and web interface

Cons

  • No finished tax report of its own for the German tax return
  • Outage monitors document around 20 incidents, several of them with deposits and withdrawals
  • Full score on the trading fee missed, because 0.15 percent taker would be needed for it
  • Crypto balances are not covered by statutory deposit protection, protection rests on private insurance

Conclusion: Bitvavo review

91/100
Very good (1.4)

Bitvavo scores 91 out of 100 points and is thus the strongest provider in this rating field. Low fees, free payment methods, an externally audited proof of cover and a broad range of orders come together with an MiCA authorisation from the Dutch AFM. Anyone looking for a European exchange with euro trading and low costs will find the most rounded provider at present here; anyone who expects a finished tax report must add a tax tool.
