About Bitvavo
Bitvavo B.V. was founded in Amsterdam in 2018 and is regarded as one of the largest crypto trading platforms in the euro area, with several hundred tradable crypto assets. Bitvavo is supervised not by BaFin (the German financial regulator) but by the Dutch authorities: originally the company was registered as a crypto service provider with the central bank De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), and since June 2025 it has held a MiCA licence from the securities supervisor Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM), which also covers business in Germany via the EU passport. Crypto balances are expressly not protected by deposit protection (Einlagensicherung), because coins are not bank deposits; euro balances are held separate from company assets via the legally independent foundation Stichting Bitvavo Payments, which likewise does not replace statutory deposit protection. The platform is aimed at price-conscious investors who value low trading fees and a large selection of coins.
Special features
- Euro balances are separated via Stichting Bitvavo Payments
- One of the first large EU exchanges with MiCA authorisation (June 2025)
- Withdrawal from Germany in May 2024, return after MiCA licensing
- Also registered with De Nederlandsche Bank as a crypto service provider
