Bitpanda is an Austrian crypto provider that on 27 January 2025 received a MiCAR licence from the German BaFin as one of the first companies at all. We examined Bitpanda under our crypto methodology, i.e. by trading costs, security and regulation, offer, platform, and taxes and reporting. Bitpanda also offers shares and ETFs, but the core business and the area assessed here is trading in crypto assets.

Highlights of our Bitpanda review

  • Bitpanda scores 79 out of 100 points in our rating.
  • MiCAR licence from BaFin dated 27 January 2025 – granted by the supervisor responsible for the German market.
  • Over 650 tradable crypto assets, savings plans and staking on over 55 coins.
  • All deposit and withdrawal fees were scrapped in February 2024; trading fees from 0.25 percent are possible via Bitpanda Fusion.

1 Trading costs

22/30
Points
Bitpanda runs two pricing models. In the standard app, a broker model with no separate order fee applies: the costs are built into the price, and Bitpanda cites 0.99 percent for Bitcoin and stablecoins and 1.49 percent for the other crypto assets (as of 09/2026). Anyone who uses Bitpanda Fusion instead trades via an order book with a fee scale that starts at 0.25 percent in tier 1 and falls to 0.02 percent at very high volume. Fusion is reachable for registered Bitpanda users directly via the web app without an additional account. On payment methods, Bitpanda is consistent: in February 2024 all deposit and withdrawal fees were scrapped, and SEPA transfers in euros are free in both directions. On the spread, the assessment is split in two – on Fusion the variable spread is around 0.05 percent, while in the standard app the priced-in mark-up of 0.99 to 1.49 percent corresponds to a much higher value. Bitpanda states these mark-ups openly. Scoring (22/30): For the taker fee we award 11 out of 15 points, because 0.25 percent is achievable via Fusion and Fusion is open to all users. On the spread there are 4 out of 8 points: it is stated but in the standard product is far above 0.5 percent. Free SEPA deposits and withdrawals give the full 7 points.

2 Security & regulation

20/28
Points
Bitpanda received the MiCAR licence from the German BaFin on 27 January 2025 and can therefore offer its services in all 27 EU member states. The choice of supervisor is notable: Bitpanda applied for the licence not with the Austrian FMA but with BaFin, where a permit for Germany already existed. For German investors this is the best possible regulatory standing. On custody, Bitpanda states that it holds the majority of crypto assets offline in cold storage; only a small, additionally secured portion remains in the hot wallet. Fiat balances are protected through Einlagensicherung Austria up to €100,000. We could not find a published proof of cover in the form of a proof of reserves, such as Kraken or Bitvavo present, for Bitpanda – we therefore award only the middle level. At account level, time-based one-time passwords and multi-factor authentication are documented; we could not verify a whitelist for withdrawal addresses or configurable withdrawal locks. Scoring (20/28): The MiCAR licence from BaFin gives the full 12 points. For custody there are 5 out of 10 points, because cold storage is stated but no proof is published. On account security we award 3 out of 6 points: two-factor authentication is verified, but further protection features such as address whitelisting are not.

3 Offer

18/18
Points
Bitpanda enables trading in Bitcoin and more than 650 other cryptocurrencies; Bitpanda Fusion also offers over 2,000 trading pairs. Because Bitpanda is a euro provider, assets are traded directly against euros – the detour via dollar stablecoins usual on US exchanges is not needed. On additional products, Bitpanda is broadly positioned. Through Bitpanda Savings, savings plans on cryptocurrencies, shares, ETFs and crypto indices can be set up. Staking is currently possible for over 55 coins, with rewards paid out weekly. Scoring (18/18): Over 650 tradable crypto assets give the full 8 points. Consistent euro trading brings the full 5 points. Savings plans and staking together give the full 5 points.

4 Platform & usability

12/14
Points
As an Austrian provider, Bitpanda delivers a consistently German-language web interface and apps for iOS and Android. Operation is designed for beginners, while Bitpanda Fusion is aimed at more active users. Five order types are available on Fusion: limit, market, stop-limit, stop-market and take-profit-limit orders. The requirement for a range beyond limit and market is therefore clearly met. Bitpanda runs a public status page at status.bitpanda.com with real-time data and incident history; individual incidents are documented there on an ongoing basis, for example when a coin is put into maintenance or trade-only mode. Scoring (12/14): A German-language interface plus apps for both systems give the full 6 points. The five order types on Fusion bring the full 4 points. For availability we award 2 out of 4 points: a status page exists, and isolated disruptions are documented.

5 Taxes & reporting

7/10
Points
Bitpanda works with the tax tool Blockpit. By single sign-on, the Bitpanda account can be connected in seconds, after which all Bitpanda transactions are imported automatically and turned into a report prepared for the German tax office. Information on the costs is inconsistent, however: at the start of the cooperation a free tax report for all Bitpanda users was mentioned, while more recent sources cite only a 10 percent discount on Blockpit reports. We therefore award only the level for a cooperation with a tax tool. Data export is straightforward: Bitpanda provides a CSV export of transactions, and there is also a documented programming interface through which tax tools collect the data automatically. Scoring (7/10): For the tax report there are 3 out of 6 points, because free provision of a finished report cannot be clearly verified, while the cooperation with Blockpit can. CSV export and API together give the full 4 points.

Conclusion: Bitpanda review

79/100
Good (2.0)

Bitpanda scores 79 out of 100 points. On regulatory standing, the provider sets the benchmark in the rating field, and on offer and usability it is also strong – deductions come for the expensive standard rate and for missing proof of custody and account security. Bitpanda suits investors who want to do everything from one German-language app and are prepared to switch to Fusion for it.
