About Bitpanda

Bitpanda was founded in Vienna in 2014 and is one of Europe's largest crypto and investment platforms; besides crypto assets, the app can also be used to trade precious metals as well as shares and ETFs in the form of derived products. Since the EU regulation MiCAR came into force, the group has been regulated several times over: the Austrian Bitpanda GmbH is authorised by the Financial Market Authority FMA as a crypto service provider; for customers in Germany, Bitpanda Asset Management GmbH, based in Frankfurt am Main, acts, which received a MiCAR permit from BaFin (the German financial regulator) in early 2025; there is also a Maltese licence from the MFSA. Important for assessing risk: crypto balances are not covered by statutory deposit protection (Einlagensicherung), because coins are not bank deposits. Euro balances are held separately from company assets in accounts at regulated partner banks; this money, too, is not a bank balance of the customer in the sense of deposit protection, but is treated separately from operating assets in an insolvency. The platform suits beginners who want to bundle crypto, metals and share derivatives in one German-language app.

Special features

  • One of the first companies with a MiCAR permit from the German BaFin
  • Share and ETF offer runs through Bitpanda Financial Services GmbH, supervised by the FMA
  • Euro balances are held separately from company assets at regulated partner banks
  • Its own debit card with which crypto and metal holdings can be used to pay
