Points

Wallester Business is an Estonian payment institution and Visa Principal Member that offers a business account with its own IBAN and a very large card allowance free of charge. The focus is on spend control via virtual cards rather than traditional corporate banking. Wallester Business scores 49 out of 100 points in our rating.

Highlights of our Wallester Business review

  • Wallester Business scores 49 out of 100 points in our rating, which equals the grade Satisfactory (3.5).
  • The Free plan costs €0 a month and includes 300 virtual cards and an unlimited number of users.
  • Incoming and outgoing SEPA transfers in euros are free of charge.
  • Estonian IBAN, no verifiable deposit protection and no accounting connection on the free plan.

1 Account fees & charges

24/30
Points
Wallester Business offers three plans. The Free plan costs €0 a month and includes 300 virtual cards, an unlimited number of physical cards, an unlimited number of user accounts and developer access to the programming interface (API). Premium costs €199 a month and adds accounting integrations and analytics; Platinum is €999 a month with dedicated support. For the price rating we use the permanently free Free plan. On transactions, Wallester is unusually generous: no fees are charged for incoming and outgoing SEPA transfers in euros, and the publicly available price information does not provide for a limit on the number of bookings. Top-ups in foreign currencies, by contrast, cost €15 each. Cash cannot be deposited with Wallester, and there is no counter or partner network. Scoring (24/30): The monthly base price receives the full 14 points for the free Free plan. We award the full 10 points for included transactions because SEPA transfers in euros are free of charge without limit. Cash deposits and withdrawals get 0 points, as cash deposits are not offered.

2 Cards & payments

10/20
Points
Cards are Wallester's real strength. Even on the free plan, 300 virtual Visa cards and an unlimited number of physical cards can be issued without card fees. Each card can be given individual spending limits, merchant categories and validity periods, and the number of user accounts is not limited. For teams with many cost centres, that is a clear advantage. All cards are prepaid-style debit cards based on the balance; there is no genuine credit card with a credit line. For traditional payments, by contrast, the offer falls short. Whether and how SEPA direct debits can be collected from third parties is not clear from the publicly available documents; the product is positioned as a spend solution and not as a collection account. We therefore rate this criterion at the lowest level under our methodology rule and state the missing information here openly. The IBAN is Estonian, which can lead to queries from German business partners and authorities. Scoring (10/20): We award 5 points for the cards included in the base price, as debit cards are included at no extra charge but a genuine credit card is missing. Additional cards for employees are free and can be controlled with spending limits, which gives the full 5 points. For SEPA direct debit collection we award 0 points because this function could not be verified.

3 Accounting & integration

6/20
Points
At Wallester, accounting integrations are reserved for the Premium plan at €199 a month. We could not verify a DATEV interface for the German market in the publicly available documents. On the free plan, users are left with data export and the open programming interface, through which transactions can be transferred into their own systems. Receipts can be uploaded and assigned to transactions, but automatic matching like that of the providers specialised in Germany is not demonstrated. According to the information available, Wallester does not offer sub-accounts with their own IBAN for reserves; the account works with one IBAN and card budgets beneath it. Overall, Wallester is more a complement to a business account for spend control than a full replacement. Scoring (6/20): For interfaces to accounting software we award 3 points, because only data export and the programming interface can be verified and no DATEV connection can be demonstrated. Receipt capture gets 3 points for upload without demonstrated automation. For sub-accounts we award 0 points, as no sub-accounts with their own IBAN can be verified.

4 Legal forms & account opening

6/16
Points
Wallester is aimed at companies registered in the European Economic Area and the UK. A registered legal entity or registered business is required; checks are carried out in a know-your-business procedure. We could not find a reliable statement that German partnerships such as the GbR without a commercial register entry are also served, which is why we do not award the full score here. Wallester does not offer a deposit account for the share capital of a GmbH or UG in formation. Account opening takes place fully online, and according to the provider the review of company documents typically takes 24 to 48 hours. The process is therefore digital, but usability within 24 hours is not guaranteed. Scoring (6/16): For permitted legal forms we award 4 points, because registered sole proprietorships and companies are served, but the full breadth of German legal forms cannot be verified. The formation or capital deposit account gets 0 points, as it is not offered. For the account opening process and its duration we award 2 points, because the process is digital but activation can take up to 48 hours.

5 Security & service

3/14
Points
Wallester AS is a payment institution authorised in Estonia and a Visa Principal Member, but not a bank. Deposit protection for balances could not be verified in the publicly available documents. According to the provider, customer funds are held separately from company assets, which is not the same as the statutory deposit protection of €100,000. On service, the offer is geared towards English-language business. We could not verify a German-language phone hotline; support runs via email and chat, and dedicated support is only provided on the Platinum plan at €999 a month. There is also no reliable information on the range of functions of a banking app for iOS and Android, and the service is mainly operated through the web portal. We therefore rate both criteria conservatively under our methodology rule. Scoring (3/14): We award 1 point for deposit protection and supervision, because Wallester operates as a payment institution without verifiable deposit protection. Customer service reachability receives 1 point, as only chat and email can be verified. For the banking app we award 1 point because full mobile functionality could not be demonstrated.

Conclusion: Wallester Business review

49/100
Satisfactory (3.5)

Wallester Business is less a business account than a very inexpensive tool for spend control via virtual cards, and in that role the offer is unmatched on price. As a sole company account, however, it is hardly suitable: direct debit collection, a DATEV connection, sub-accounts and deposit protection are missing or cannot be verified. Wallester makes sense as a complement to a German main account.
