Trade Republic has taken the German financial market by storm and, in record time, developed from a pure neobroker into a full "financial super app" for more than 4 million customers. In our review, we examine whether the combination of extremely cheap orders, high interest and the innovative Saveback card really is the best overall package for private investors in Germany at present.

Highlights of our Trade Republic review

  • Trade Republic scores 86/100 points in our rating.
  • Unbeatably cheap: €1 third-party cost flat fee per trade, savings plans are completely free.
  • One of the most attractive interest offers on the market: 2% p.a. on the settlement balance.
  • The new Trade Republic card offers 1% Saveback, which is invested directly into a savings plan.

1 Account management

25/25
Points
Trade Republic's "settlement account" (Verrechnungskonto) now functions as a full current account with its own IBAN. Account management is unconditionally free, with no minimum monthly deposit. The account is opened purely digitally via the app and completed in a few minutes. Simplicity deserves particular mention: one account for everything – investing, saving and paying. Trade Republic does not offer an overdraft (Dispositionskredit) in the traditional sense, as the account is run primarily on a credit-balance basis. Points: 25/25

2 Cards

12/15
Points
Trade Republic offers a Visa debit card available in three variants: as a virtual card (free), as a classic plastic card (one-off €5) or as an elegant Mirror card made of metal (one-off €50). The highlight is the Saveback programme: for every card payment, Trade Republic credits 1% of the amount, which is automatically invested in an ETF savings plan. This turns everyday spending into an investment strategy. Points: 12/15

3 Cash withdrawals

10/20
Points
With the Trade Republic card, customers can withdraw cash worldwide. From an amount of €100, withdrawals at almost all ATMs worldwide are free. For smaller amounts under €100, a fee of €1 applies. This is a fair arrangement, but somewhat less flexible than providers such as C24 or Revolut (on certain plans). Paying in your own cash is currently not possible at Trade Republic. Points: 10/20

4 Payments

8/8
Points
When it comes to payments, Trade Republic meets all modern standards: Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported natively. There are no foreign currency fees on payments abroad – customers benefit from the real Visa exchange rate. Together with the 1% Saveback, the card is one of the most attractive solutions for daily use, both at home and while travelling. Points: 8/8

5 Interest & saving

7/7
Points
Here Trade Republic outclasses almost the entire competition. With currently 2% p.a. interest on uninvested balances (up to €50,000), TR offers one of the strongest lasting interest offers on the market. Interest is calculated and credited monthly. In addition, the savings plan offering, with more than 5,000 free ETF and share savings plans, is market-leading. The minimum savings amount of just €1 makes getting started possible for everyone. Points: 7/7

6 Banking app & features

10/10
Points
The Trade Republic app is the heart of the offering. It is extremely minimalist, lightning fast and intuitive to use. Price alerts, timeline, portfolio analysis and tax reports are excellently integrated. However, classic banking features such as sub-accounts (Spaces) or detailed budget analyses, which are standard at specialised neobanks, are missing. Even so, the UX quality in the broker segment is unmatched. Points: 10/10

7 Customer service

7/8
Points
Customer service is Trade Republic's Achilles heel. There is no telephone support; enquiries can only be made via the app or by email. In phases of high volatility or with complex problems, response times can be long. The help section in the app is extensive, but it cannot replace personal contact in urgent cases. Points: 7/8

8 Security & extras

7/7
Points
As a German institution with BaFin authorisation, Trade Republic offers the highest security standards. Deposits are protected by law up to €100,000, and the securities are held as special assets (Sondervermögen) at renowned partner banks. The Saveback programme and the round-up function (saving your spare change) are excellent extras that encourage playful wealth building. Points: 7/7

Conclusion: Trade Republic review

86/100
Very good (1.7)

Trade Republic scores 86 out of 100 points and is particularly suited to building wealth. The combination of extremely low fees, high interest on cash holdings and the innovative Saveback programme is without competition on the German market at present. It is the ideal "second account" or even main account for anyone who wants to approach finances in a consistently digital and return-oriented way.
