92/100
Points

Smartbroker+ is a German online broker based in Berlin that offers a commission-free custody account with a connection to gettex and, in addition, to the German floor exchanges and Xetra. We rated the securities custody account out of 100 points using the kosten.org custody account methodology. All terms come from the provider's schedule of prices and services (Preis- und Leistungsverzeichnis) and its terms pages, as of September 2026.

Highlights of our Smartbroker+ review

  • Smartbroker+ scores 92 out of 100 points in our review.
  • Custody and settlement account cost 0 euros, no external current account is needed.
  • All savings plan executions are free, and the minimum savings amount is 1.00 euro.
  • Besides gettex, Xetra is also tradable – there with a 4.00 euro order fee plus a trading venue fee.

1 Custody account fee

20/20
Points
Smartbroker+ holds the custody account free of charge permanently. The schedule of prices and services (version July 2026) shows 0.00 euros for custody, with no minimum turnover, no minimum holding and no salary deposit condition. Inactivity of the custody account does not trigger a fee either. A separate current account at another bank is not required. The settlement account belonging to the custody account is kept alongside it and is also held free of charge; deposits and withdrawals are made by transfer from any reference account. No ongoing costs therefore arise for the pure account infrastructure. Scoring (20/20): The custody account fee is unconditionally free (15/15). A paid or indeed any additional current account is not necessary, because the settlement account is part of the custody account (5/5).

2 Trading costs

25/25
Points
Via the gettex trading venue, Smartbroker+ trades shares, ETFs and funds from an order volume of 500 euros with no order fee; below 500 euros, 1.00 euro is charged. A one-off investment of 500 euros therefore costs exactly 0.00 euros. Savings plan executions are generally free regardless of the instalment, so an ETF savings plan of 400 euros also costs 0.00 euros. Smartbroker+ is not restricted to one trading venue. Xetra and the German floor exchanges can be accessed; according to the terms overview, a 4.00 euro order fee plus the respective trading venue fee of 0.01 per cent (minimum 1.50 euros) applies. For crypto trading, the broker charges a mark-up of 0.90 per cent on the price. Scoring (25/25): The 400-euro ETF savings plan is free (12/12). The 500-euro one-off investment via gettex is free (10/10). Xetra orders are possible, albeit chargeable – the methodology only rates availability here (3/3).

3 Savings plan offering

20/20
Points
On its own savings plan page, Smartbroker+ shows around 10,800 savings-plan-eligible securities, including more than 2,400 ETFs as well as shares, funds, ETCs and crypto ETPs. The broker is therefore clearly above the top methodology band of 2,000 ETF savings plans. All savings plan executions are free of charge – there is no distinction between paid and promotional ETFs, as many branch banks and direct banks have. The savings amount can be freely chosen from 1.00 euro to 5,000 euros per execution, which also allows tiny savings plans and saving for children. Scoring (20/20): More than 2,400 ETF savings plans (8/8), all of them free and therefore also above 2,000 (7/7), minimum savings amount 1.00 euro and therefore in the top band (5/5).

4 Product range

15/15
Points
On its product overview, the provider states around 40,000 tradable shares, about 2,500 ETFs, around 18,000 funds, around 40,000 bonds and about 4.6 million derivatives. That is an offering at the level of traditional direct banks and significantly broader than at most pure neobrokers. Crypto assets are tradable and eligible for savings plans via crypto ETPs, and Smartbroker+ charges a 0.90 per cent mark-up for trading. All three additional classes queried by the methodology – crypto, derivatives and bonds – are therefore covered. Scoring (15/15): Around 2,500 ETFs are above the 2,000 threshold (6/6), around 40,000 shares above the 7,500 threshold (6/6), and crypto, derivatives and bonds are fully available (3/3).

5 Interest & extras

2/8
Points
The pure settlement account earns no interest. Within the custody account relationship, however, Smartbroker+ offers a separate interest account that pays 2.00 per cent p.a. on balances up to 100,000 euros (as of September 2026). This interest account is a product of its own and not the settlement account of the custody account; anyone who wants to park money at interest has to transfer it there actively. As a new-customer benefit, the SMARTFriends programme runs, with 50 euros starting credit for referred new customers. We could not verify a generally accessible custody account opening bonus in the three-digit range beyond this on the provider's pages. Scoring (2/8): What is rated is the interest on the settlement account, and that is 0.00 per cent (0/5). We do not count a separately opened interest account, otherwise every instant-access savings offer from a bank would be a custody account benefit. The new-customer bonus of 50 euros meets the 50-euro threshold but not the 100-euro threshold (2/3).

6 Usability

6/8
Points
Smartbroker+ offers apps for iOS and Android as well as a web interface. Ratings are mixed: in the App Store, the app stands at 4.3 stars from around 2,224 ratings, in the Google Play Store at 3.8 stars from around 4,910 ratings (as of September 2026). The Android version is viewed much more critically by users than the iOS version. Real-time prices and real-time charts are available free of charge, although not for all connected trading venues. For gettex and Tradegate, the venues relevant in everyday use, real-time display is available without an additional subscription. Scoring (6/8): Apps for both platforms are available, but the average rating is below 4.5 stars (3/5). Free real-time prices are offered (3/3).

7 Customer service & security

4/4
Points
Smartbroker+ can be reached by telephone on a Berlin landline number (030 257708403), Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. No additional costs apply beyond the usual landline charges, and there is no premium-rate service number. Email and a help section are also available. Availability is limited to working days and office hours – anyone with a problem with an order in the evening or at the weekend will reach no one. For the methodology, however, all that counts at this point is whether free telephone support exists. Scoring (4/4): Telephone support is available and can be reached via a landline number with no additional costs (4/4).

Conclusion: Smartbroker+ review

92/100
Very good (1.4)

With 92 out of 100 points, Smartbroker+ is one of the strongest all-rounders in the custody account comparison: free custody, free savings plans from 1 euro and a product range at direct bank level. Points are deducted mainly for interest, the new-customer bonus of just 50 euros and the more weakly rated Android app. The custody account suits investors who want to trade cheaply via gettex but do not want to do without Xetra and bonds.
