Revolut has revolutionised paying while travelling and, in record time, developed from a travel app into a global "financial super app". With more than 40 million customers worldwide and German IBANs now available, the neobank is also attacking the core business of the traditional banks. In our review, we examine whether Revolut works as a main account or whether the app loses focus on the essentials amid all its features.

Highlights of our Revolut review

  • Revolut scores 72/100 points in our rating – the ultimate app for globetrotters and tech fans.
  • One of the best payment experiences on the market thanks to the absence of foreign currency fees and the real interbank exchange rate.
  • German IBAN included: salary payments and direct debits now work smoothly.
  • Enormous range of functions: from crypto trading and shares to hotel bookings directly in the app.

1 Account management

18/25
Points
The "Standard" account at Revolut is permanently free and available with no minimum monthly deposit. Account opening is entirely digital and takes a few minutes, and thanks to the introduction of German IBANs (DE...) it has now become fully suitable for everyday use. However, the Standard plan has some restrictions: currency exchange is more expensive at weekends and the monthly limit for fee-free exchange is capped. The overdraft rate (Dispozins) is calculated individually and is usually within the normal market range. Points: 18/25

2 Cards

11/15
Points
The Standard account includes a virtual card that can be used for mobile payments immediately. Anyone who wants a physical plastic card pays a one-off delivery fee of usually €5.99. The range of premium cards is revolutionary: for monthly fees (up to €45 for Ultra), customers receive exclusive metal cards, platinum cards or even personalised designs. For the basic account, the card offering is functional but slightly disadvantaged compared with providers that offer a free physical card. Points: 11/15

3 Cash withdrawals

8/20
Points
Cash provision is Revolut's biggest weakness on the Standard plan. Customers can only withdraw €200 a month, or at most 5 times, free of charge – whichever comes first. After that, a fee of 2% (minimum €1) applies. Particularly in Germany, where cash is often still indispensable, you quickly hit limits with Revolut. In the cash category, Revolut therefore ranks among the lower places compared with all-rounders such as ING or DKB. Points: 8/20

4 Payments

8/8
Points
When it comes to payments, Revolut is the undisputed champion. Payments in foreign currencies are made at the real interbank exchange rate with no hidden mark-ups (on weekdays). This makes Revolut the perfect card for holidays abroad or online purchases in US dollars or British pounds. The integration of Apple Pay and Google Pay is perfect. The app reports every transaction in milliseconds and allows instant conversion into more than 30 currencies within the app. Points: 8/8

5 Interest & saving

4/7
Points
With its "Flexible Accounts", Revolut offers an innovative way to earn interest on balances. The money is invested in money market funds, which allows daily interest credits. The interest rates are often very attractive and depend on the subscription plan chosen. The system is flexible but theoretically carries a higher risk than statutory deposit protection (Einlagensicherung) on a conventional instant-access savings account at a German bank. Even so, the savings feature is implemented intuitively and efficiently. Points: 4/7

6 Banking app & features

10/10
Points
No other banking app offers as many features as Revolut. Besides conventional banking, users can trade shares, commodities and cryptocurrencies, take out travel insurance, split group bills or even book accommodation (Stays). The "super app" is technically brilliantly implemented but sometimes feels a little overloaded because of the sheer number of functions. Even so, the app's UX and speed set standards in the financial sector. Points: 10/10

7 Customer service

6/8
Points
At Revolut, customer service is provided primarily via the in-app chat. On the Standard account, you sometimes have to expect longer waiting times with automated bots before reaching a human member of staff. Priority support is only available to paying premium customers. In emergencies, purely digital communication can be frustrating, even though the staff in the chat are usually very competent and solution-oriented. Points: 6/8

8 Security & extras

7/7
Points
Revolut holds a European banking licence (Bank of Lithuania) and is therefore covered by EU-wide deposit protection of up to €100,000. The introduction of German IBANs also increases regulatory acceptance in Germany. The security features in the app are exemplary: location-based security, one-time cards for online purchases and the instant blocking of individual card functions make Revolut one of the safest solutions for digital payments. Points: 7/7

Conclusion: Revolut review

72/100
Good (2.4)

With 72 out of 100 points, Revolut secures a good rating. It remains the first choice for anyone who travels a lot, shops online internationally or wants to manage their finances in a modern, playful way. As a pure salary account for "cash fans", however, it is less suitable. The transformation into a full bank with a German IBAN does make Revolut more attractive than ever.
