58/100
Points

As a brand of Deutsche Bank AG, Postbank offers three Business Giro models with published pricing. The offer combines branch access and cash handling with a DATEV interface, but charges base prices from €12.90 a month. Postbank scores 58 out of 100 points in our rating.

Highlights of our Postbank review

  • Postbank scores 58 out of 100 points in our rating, which equals the grade Satisfactory (3.1).
  • Business Giro costs €12.90 a month, Business Giro aktiv plus €24.90.
  • No free transactions; paperless bookings cost €0.12 to €0.28 depending on the model.
  • Founder account with share capital deposit, and the DATEV interface is free in the first year.

1 Account fees & charges

7/30
Points
Postbank offers three business account models. Business Giro costs €12.90 a month, Business Giro aktiv €16.90 and Business Giro aktiv plus €24.90. A limited-time promotion applies to new customers, under which account management is free until the end of March 2027; as this is a time-limited promotion and not a permanent price, we rate the regular list price of €12.90. None of the three models includes free transactions. Every paperless booking costs €0.28 on Business Giro, €0.22 on Business Giro aktiv and €0.12 on Business Giro aktiv plus. Cash can be deposited and withdrawn at Postbank locations; for deposits the bank charges €3.00 per €5,000 or part thereof. Cash handling is therefore possible, but chargeable. Scoring (7/30): The monthly base price receives 4 points, because the cheapest model at €12.90 falls into the band up to €20. We award 0 points for included transactions, as no model includes free transactions and every booking is charged. Cash deposits and withdrawals get 3 points because they are possible but chargeable.

2 Cards & payments

15/20
Points
For the account holder, the Postbank Card is included in the account without an additional card fee. The Mastercard Business Card, a genuine credit card, costs €40 in the first year if opened together with the account and €80 a year thereafter; every further card also costs €80 a year. The credit card is also only available from the Business Giro aktiv model. Additional cards for employees are therefore possible, but clearly chargeable. For payments, the full range of a universal bank is available. SEPA direct debits can be collected, and bulk transfers, standing orders and instant transfers are part of online banking. The IBAN is German, and payments to authorities and suppliers run without any particularities. Scoring (15/20): We award 5 points for the card included in the base price, as the Postbank Card is included without a card fee but the genuine credit card is charged separately. Additional cards for employees are available for a fee, which gives 3 out of 5 points. SEPA direct debit collection is included in the account model and receives the full 7 points.

3 Accounting & integration

10/20
Points
Postbank provides a DATEV interface that is free in the first year and then charged at €10 a month. New customers also receive twelve months of sevDesk at no extra charge, and further accounting programs can be connected via the PSD2 interfaces (the EU's open-banking standard). Connectivity to the common tools is therefore in place, although chargeable after the first year. We could not verify receipt capture with upload and matching within online banking; receipt processing takes place in the connected programs. Likewise, we could not verify an integrated sub-account model with its own IBAN for reserves. Anyone who wants to keep VAT reserves separate needs another account with its own fees. We state both missing items here openly. Scoring (10/20): The interfaces to accounting software reach the full 10 points because a DATEV connection and several accounting tools are supported. For receipt capture we award 0 points, as no receipt function in the account could be verified. Sub-accounts get 0 points because no corresponding model can be verified.

4 Legal forms & account opening

14/16
Points
Postbank runs business accounts for freelancers, sole proprietorships and traders, as well as for partnerships such as the GbR, OHG and KG and for corporations such as the GmbH and UG. Coverage of legal forms is therefore complete and clearly broader than at the digital providers. For founders there is a founder account that can be opened if the trade was registered no more than 365 days ago; paying in the share capital for a GmbH or UG in formation is possible, and the deposit confirmation is issued. Account opening can be done either fully online or in a branch. We could not find a reliable commitment in the publicly available documents that the account will be usable within 24 hours, which is why we do not award the full score here. Scoring (14/16): The permitted legal forms cover sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations and receive the full 7 points. We award 5 points for the formation or capital deposit account. For the account opening process and its duration we award 2 points, because the process is possible digitally but activation within 24 hours cannot be verified.

5 Security & service

12/14
Points
Since the merger, Postbank has been a brand of Deutsche Bank AG and therefore operates under its full banking licence. Balances are protected by statutory deposit protection of up to €100,000 per customer, and the deposit protection fund of the Association of German Banks also applies. Deposit protection therefore matches that of the parent company. Customer service can be reached via a German-language phone hotline and at Postbank locations. A fixed personal contact in the form of a named corporate customer adviser is not provided as standard in Postbank's business customer segment; it is reserved for Deutsche Bank's corporate banking. The banking app is available for iOS and Android and covers transfers, card control, transactions and approvals. Scoring (12/14): We award the full 6 points for a banking licence of its own with statutory deposit protection via Deutsche Bank AG. Customer service reachability gets 3 points for the German-language hotline without a fixed contact person. The banking app for iOS and Android with full functionality receives 3 points.

Conclusion: Postbank review

58/100
Satisfactory (3.1)

Postbank delivers a solid branch-based account with complete coverage of legal forms, a founder account and cash access, priced below Deutsche Bank. The sums only add up, however, if booking volumes stay manageable, as there are no free transactions. Digitally working self-employed people will find the same security at FYRST at much lower running costs.
