NordVPN is one of the best-known VPN services on the market. The company, based in Panama – a country with no mandatory data retention and outside the 5/9/14 Eyes alliances – has built a reputation as a trustworthy provider that not only promises privacy but backs it up with independent audits. In our rating we assess NordVPN using our transparent 100-point methodology.

Highlights of our NordVPN review

  • NordVPN scores 91/100 points in our rating.
  • Registered in Panama: no legal obligation to retain data.
  • More than 7,000 servers in around 150 countries, 10 devices at the same time.
  • Basic from €3.49 a month (2 years + 3 months), renewal €139.08 a year.

1 Security & privacy

28/30
Points
NordVPN encrypts via OpenVPN and IKEv2 with AES-256-GCM; its in-house NordLynx protocol uses ChaCha20-Poly1305, like WireGuard. NordLynx is based on WireGuard and combines its speed advantages with a proprietary double-NAT technology that prevents identifiable data from being stored on the server. OpenVPN (UDP/TCP) and IKEv2/IPsec are also available. The no-logs policy has been audited and confirmed several times by independent auditors (PricewaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte). Since 2020, NordVPN has run its entire network exclusively on RAM-only servers (diskless infrastructure). That means all data is irrevocably erased on every restart. This architecture makes it technically impossible to store user data permanently – even if a server were physically seized. The kill switch is available on all platforms and cuts the internet connection immediately if the VPN connection drops. DNS leak protection and IPv6 leak protection are enabled by default. Dark Web Monitor notifies users if their login details appear in data leaks. Scoring (28/30): The highest security standards with an audited no-logs policy and RAM-only infrastructure. A minimal deduction for the 2019 security incident (a Finnish server), which has since, however, been fully addressed by the diskless migration.

2 Speed & performance

18/20
Points
NordLynx is NordVPN's trump card for speed: the WireGuard-based protocol is lean and sets up connections quickly. How large the speed loss is depends heavily on your line, server distance and load – our grading is an editorial assessment, not our own series of measurements. NordVPN advertises streaming support. There is no guarantee: streaming services continually block detected VPN addresses. Try your preferred service within the 30-day money-back period. For torrenting, NordVPN offers dedicated P2P servers. Automatic server selection usually connects to a nearby server with a low load. Scoring (18/20): A very fast protocol (NordLynx), streaming support and P2P servers. A slight deduction because speed and streaming access can vary depending on the server.

3 Servers & locations

17/18
Points
According to NordVPN's server directory, the provider operates more than 7,000 servers in around 150 countries – one of the largest VPN networks. Server coverage is outstanding: besides the usual locations in Europe, North America and Asia, there are also servers in Africa, South America and the Middle East – regions that many competitors neglect. The special servers are particularly worth highlighting: Double VPN (traffic is routed through two servers), obfuscated servers (which disguise VPN use in countries with censorship such as China), Onion Over VPN (direct Tor network integration) and dedicated P2P servers. This variety makes NordVPN the Swiss army knife among VPN providers. According to NordVPN, the servers run as RAM-only servers (without hard drives). For more exotic countries, check in the server directory whether the location you want is physically in the country or listed as a virtual location. Scoring (17/18): A huge network with excellent country coverage and a variety of special servers. Only a minimal deduction, because some countries have only a few servers.

4 Features & ease of use

18/20
Points
The NordVPN apps are available on all relevant platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV, Fire TV and as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. The user interface is modern and intuitive – an interactive world map shows all servers at a glance, and one-click connection requires no technical knowledge at all. Up to 10 devices can be connected at the same time, which is sufficient for most households. Split tunnelling (available on Android and Windows) lets you exclude selected apps from the VPN tunnel – handy for local banking or printers on the home network. Even the Basic plan includes protection against fraud and phishing as well as the Dark Web Monitor. Antivirus, malware protection and ad/tracker blockers only come with the “Complete” plan (which also includes a password manager and 1 TB of cloud storage); “Ultimate Max” adds a dedicated IP and cyber protection insurance. Customer service can be reached around the clock via live chat. Scoring (18/20): Excellent apps, strong extra features and 24/7 support. A deduction because ad and malware blockers are only included in the more expensive plans, for the limit of 10 devices (Surfshark: unlimited) and the missing split tunnelling on iOS.

5 Price & plans

10/12
Points
NordVPN offers three plan levels – Basic, Complete and Ultimate Max – with several terms. In the current 2-year promotion (2 years + 3 months) they work out at €3.49, €3.99 and €7.99 a month respectively; for Basic, €94.23 is due upfront for 27 months. The 1-year plan costs €4.99 a month, the monthly plan €14.99 (as of 30 October 2026, possibly plus VAT according to the pricing page). The renewal price is important: after the first term, Basic renews automatically at €139.08 a year. All plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. Password manager and cloud storage are already included in the higher plans. There is no free version. Compared with Surfshark (from €2.49 a month) and CyberGhost (from €2.19 a month), NordVPN is somewhat more expensive in the first term but offers a larger server network and more special servers. Scoring (10/12): Fair value for money on the 2-year plan, 30-day guarantee. A deduction for the expensive monthly plan, the sharp price jump on renewal and the missing free tier.

Conclusion: NordVPN review

91/100
Very good (1.4)

NordVPN scores 91 out of 100 points in the VPN comparison. The combination of an audited no-logs policy, RAM-only servers, the fast NordLynx protocol and a very large server network is convincing. But factor in the renewal price (Basic: €139.08 a year) and choose the plan level to match the extras you really need.
