N26 has shaped mobile banking in Germany like hardly any other provider. Having started out as a pioneer, the Berlin-based neobank now has to hold its own against strong competitors such as C24 and the modernised apps of the traditional banks. In our review, we examine whether the "mobile first" philosophy is still convincing in 2026 or whether the focus on design comes at the expense of service.

Highlights of our N26 review

  • N26 scores 73/100 points in our rating – excellent technology meets weaknesses in service.
  • Unconditionally free current account with no minimum monthly deposit – ideal for students and minimalists.
  • One of the best payment experiences worldwide thanks to the absence of foreign currency fees.
  • Market-leading app UX with real-time push notifications and intuitive design.

1 Account management

20/25
Points
N26's Standard account remains one of the few genuinely free offers on the market: there is no minimum monthly deposit and no basic fee. Account opening via video identification is legendary for its speed and takes under 10 minutes. However, the zero cost is bought with compromises on features: instant transfers cost an extra €0.99 on the Standard plan, which is a clear disadvantage compared with C24 (free). The overdraft rate (Dispozins), currently 12.13% p.a., is rather at the upper end of the market. Points: 20/25

2 Cards

11/15
Points
The Standard account includes a virtual Mastercard debit card that is ready to use with Apple Pay and Google Pay immediately after account opening. Anyone who wants a physical card made of recycled plastic pays a one-off delivery fee of €10. N26 no longer offers a Girocard. In Germany this can still lead to acceptance problems at some smaller retailers or public authorities. Anyone who wants a premium metal card or travel insurance has to switch to the expensive premium plans (up to €16.90). Points: 11/15

3 Cash withdrawals

10/20
Points
N26 shows clear weaknesses in the cash category. The Standard account includes only 3 free withdrawals a month in Germany. Every further withdrawal costs a hefty €2. A plus point is "CASH26": customers can withdraw cash free of charge at more than 12,000 retail partners (REWE, Penny, dm etc.) – up to €200 per transaction. Paying in cash is possible the same way but costs a 1.5% fee on the whole amount. Points: 10/20

4 Payments

8/8
Points
Payments are where N26 plays to its full strength. There are no foreign currency fees on card payments worldwide – no matter which currency you pay in. This makes N26 one of the most inexpensive travel companions. The integration of Apple Pay and Google Pay is perfectly implemented. Every payment is reported immediately by push notification, which ensures maximum transparency and security. Points: 8/8

5 Interest & saving

5/7
Points
N26 now also offers interest on balances, managed via the app. The terms are solid but usually do not match the top offers of specialised interest products or neo-brokers. With "Spaces", N26 provides an intuitive system for savings goals, although the free account includes only 2 such sub-accounts. Anyone who wants proper budgeting with many pots is quickly pushed towards the paid upgrade. Points: 5/7

6 Banking app & features

10/10
Points
The N26 app remains the benchmark in terms of design and speed. The user interface is extremely tidy, operation is smooth and it is simply fun to use. Features such as automatic categorisation of spending and detailed statistics help you keep an eye on your finances. What is missing is deep multi-banking integration or innovative Pockets with their own IBAN, as offered by the competition from C24. Nevertheless, the purely technical implementation of the app is absolutely world class. Points: 10/10

7 Customer service

2/8
Points
Customer service is unfortunately still the biggest point of criticism. You will look in vain for telephone support on the Standard account. You have to rely on the in-app chat, which can disappoint with long waiting times and standardised answers. In the event of serious problems such as account blocks or fraud, a direct, competent contact person is often missing. This shows the downside of the radically digital approach. Points: 2/8

8 Security & extras

7/7
Points
N26 holds a full German banking licence and is supervised by BaFin. Deposit protection (Einlagensicherung) of up to €100,000 is therefore guaranteed. Security features such as live card blocking in the app and biometric logins are standard. Extras such as crypto trading or exclusive partner offers on the premium plans round off the offering but are less relevant for the basic account. Points: 7/7

Conclusion: N26 review

73/100
Good (2.4)

With 73 out of 100 points, N26 secures a good rating. The bank is perfect for digital natives and travellers looking for a fast, attractive and inexpensive solution worldwide. The weaknesses in support and the hard limits on cash, however, prevent a top placing compared with all-rounders such as ING or technically superior neobanks such as C24.
