HypoVereinsbank (HVB) is one of the most long-established German banks and belongs to the UniCredit group, one of the largest European financial groups. With around 400 branches and a strong focus on premium banking, we review whether HVB is still competitive in the digital age.

Highlights of our HypoVereinsbank review

  • HypoVereinsbank scores 63/100 points in our rating – a premium bank with high costs.
  • Part of the Cash Group: free withdrawals at 9,000 cash machines.
  • HVB ExklusivKonto with a comprehensive insurance package.
  • Strong branch network, especially in southern Germany.

1 Account management

12/25
Points
No free current account: the HVB AktivKonto costs €4.90 a month, the HVB PlusKonto €9.90 a month and the HVB ExklusivKonto €14.90 a month. For under-30s, the Starter account is free. The overdraft rate is 13.67% a year – one of the highest on the market. Compared with free neobanks or the free ING, that is much more expensive. Scoring (12/25): No free standard account and an extremely high overdraft rate cost many points. At least there is a free Starter account for young customers.

2 Card offer

10/15
Points
Girocard included. Visa or Mastercard debit card optional. The ExklusivKonto includes premium credit cards with an insurance package (travel, rental car, etc.). The variety of cards is greater than at most neobanks, but also more expensive. Scoring (10/15): Good card offer, especially in the ExklusivKonto. Deductions because cheaper plans only include basic cards.

3 Cash withdrawals

14/20
Points
As a Cash Group member, HVB customers can withdraw cash free of charge at around 9,000 cash machines of Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Postbank and HVB. Cash deposits are possible in HVB branches. Abroad, fees apply with the girocard; with the ExklusivKonto credit card, withdrawals are free worldwide. Scoring (14/20): The Cash Group with 9,000 cash machines is good. Cash deposits in branches are a plus. Deductions for foreign fees on the basic plan.

4 Paying

5/8
Points
Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported. Contactless payment is possible with the girocard and the credit cards. Foreign-currency fees: 1.75% with the girocard; with the ExklusivKonto, payments are fee-free worldwide. Scoring (5/8): Mobile payment is available. Foreign-currency fees on the basic account prevent a higher rating.

5 Interest & saving

2/7
Points
No interest on balances in the current account. Call money (instant-access savings) and fixed-term deposit offers are available, but with below-average interest. HVB positions itself more as an advisory bank for investment products than as a savings account provider. Scoring (2/7): No interest on the current account and below-average savings offers.

6 Banking app & features

5/10
Points
The HVB Mobile Banking app offers transfers, photo transfers, account management and photoTAN (a camera-based security code). The app has 4.0 stars in the App Store – solid, but not outstanding. Modern features such as sub-accounts or budgeting are missing. Multibanking is supported. Scoring (5/10): Functional app with multibanking. No modern finance features.

7 Customer service

6/8
Points
Personal advice in around 400 branches, concentrated in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Phone support is easy to reach. Online chat is available. The quality of advice in the branches is generally praised. Scoring (6/8): Strong branch network with good advice. Deduction for the regional concentration in the south.

8 Security & extras

5/7
Points
BaFin-regulated with statutory and voluntary deposit protection. As part of the UniCredit group, a large European group stands behind the bank. The ExklusivKonto offers extensive travel insurance and a concierge service. Scoring (5/7): Solid security and good extras in the premium segment. No new-customer bonus.

Conclusion: HypoVereinsbank review

59/100
Satisfactory (3.0)

HypoVereinsbank scores 63 out of 100 points and is a premium provider for customers who value personal advice and a comprehensive insurance package. The high costs and extreme overdraft rate are clear drawbacks. For price-conscious customers, ING, DKB or C24 are much more attractive.
