HMP Brokers is operated by Helbig Marx und Partner GmbH of Düsseldorf, a tied agent under the liability umbrella of Innovative Investment Solutions GmbH (BaFin register number 80160148). Through the link to Interactive Brokers, genuine securities are traded on around 150 exchanges rather than predominantly contracts for difference. We therefore rate HMP Brokers under our depot methodology rather than the methodology for CFD and forex brokers.

Highlights of our HMP Brokers review

  • HMP Brokers scores 48/100 points in our rating.
  • There are no account management fees, and a current account with the provider is not required.
  • Around 150 exchanges are reachable through the Interactive Brokers link.
  • A savings plan offer cannot be verified, and the minimum deposit is €2,000 or a securities transfer.

1 Depot fee

20/20
Points
HMP Brokers charges no account management fees for the securities depot. There are therefore no fixed running costs just for holding positions, which is a relief especially over longer holding periods. A current account with the provider is not necessary. Payments run through a reference account at the customer's own bank. The entry hurdle should be noted, however: to open an account, HMP requires a minimum deposit of €2,000 or, alternatively, a securities transfer. Scoring (20/20): Free depot management earns 15 points, and the unneeded current account a further 5 points.

2 Trading costs

5/25
Points
HMP trades German shares from €5.00 per order and US shares from US$10.00. A one-off investment of €500 therefore costs €5.00. That is understandable for a model with personal support, but expensive compared with direct banks and neobrokers, where comparable orders often cost €1 or less. Trading via Xetra is possible, which matters for buying liquid ETFs cheaply. We could not verify a savings plan offer with defined execution costs, so we award no points for that criterion. Scoring (5/25): Without a verifiable savings plan offer, the 12 points for the execution costs of a €400 ETF savings plan are dropped. The €500 order costs €5.00, which is more than €3 and less than €7, giving 2 out of 10 points. The possible Xetra order brings the full 3 points.

3 Savings plan offer

0/20
Points
An ETF or share savings plan is not publicly documented at HMP Brokers. Neither a number of ETFs eligible for savings plans nor a minimum savings rate is stated. The provider positions itself through personal support and coaching offers, not through automated wealth building. Instead, the offer includes paid training packages: the Selftrader package costs €299 plus VAT, i.e. €355.81, and advanced coaching comes to €699. For investors who simply want to invest in a world ETF every month, this is the wrong provider. Scoring (0/20): Because neither a savings plan offer nor a minimum savings rate can be verified, we award 0 points in all three criteria of this chapter.

4 Product range

14/15
Points
Through the link to Interactive Brokers and the Trader Workstation, customers get access to around 150 exchanges worldwide. For shares and ETFs, the offer is therefore far above the thresholds of our methodology, including small caps and foreign exchanges that traditional direct banks do not cover. Bonds and derivatives such as options and futures are also tradable. We could not verify that cryptocurrencies are tradable, so we award only the middle level for the combined criterion. Scoring (14/15): There are 6 points for the number of tradable ETFs and 6 points for the number of tradable shares. Two of the categories crypto, derivatives and bonds can be verified, giving 2 out of 3 points.

5 Interest & extras

0/8
Points
HMP Brokers makes no public statements on interest on balances in the settlement account. We therefore apply the lowest level, but expressly point out that this is a missing statement and not a documented zero rate. There is no new-customer bonus. Instead, the provider advertises protection of up to US$900,000 through the Interactive Brokers companies IBIE and IBLLC – that is a matter of deposit protection, not of interest, and is therefore not covered in this chapter. Scoring (0/8): With no verifiable interest on the settlement account 0 out of 5 points, with no new-customer bonus 0 out of 3 points.

6 Usability

5/8
Points
Trading is done through the Trader Workstation and the IBKR apps, which are available for iOS and Android and well rated in the stores. The Trader Workstation is professional trading software with a wide range of order types – beginners need time to get used to it, which HMP addresses with its paid coaching packages. Real-time prices are not included free of charge but are billed as paid market data packages per exchange. Anyone who wants to watch several trading venues in real time pays extra each month here. Scoring (5/8): The apps, available on both platforms and well rated, earn the full 5 points. Because real-time prices are paid, we award 0 out of 3 points.

7 Customer service & security

4/4
Points
Support can be reached on 0211 56157200, Mondays from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesdays to Thursdays from 9 am to 7 pm and Fridays from 9 am to 3 pm. Outside these hours, HMP refers customers to the toll-free Interactive Brokers support on 00800-42-276537. HMP Brokers is not an independently licensed institution but a tied agent under the liability umbrella of Innovative Investment Solutions GmbH, with BaFin register number 80160148. Depot management and custody of the securities are handled through Interactive Brokers. Scoring (4/4): Free German-language phone support with fixed service hours earns the full 4 points.

Conclusion: HMP Brokers review

48/100
Satisfactory (3.6)

HMP Brokers is a personally supported route into the Interactive Brokers infrastructure and is therefore of interest to self-directed investors with larger order volumes. In our depot methodology, it is above all the missing savings plan offer that costs points, along with comparatively high order costs and the entry hurdle of €2,000. There are much cheaper alternatives for a classic ETF savings plan.
