heysafe is a young insurtech from Berlin that offers rent deposit guarantees fully digitally. Purchase takes only a few minutes.

Highlights of our heysafe review

  • 100% digital purchase
  • Instant guarantee certificate by email
  • Modern, user-friendly interface
  • Berlin insurtech

1 Costs & terms

23/30
Points
According to its own website, heysafe charges 4.3% of the deposit amount per year (from €3.25 a month) – on a standard deposit of €900 that is €38.70 a year. heysafe is therefore just above DepositDirect (4.2%) and below kautionsfrei.de (4.7%). Pricing is transparent and without hidden costs. There is no set-up fee and no processing fee on cancellation. Billing is annually in advance. As a Berlin insurtech, heysafe relies on lean cost structures and can thereby offer competitive prices without cutting back on service. Scoring (23/30): Transparent, market-rate price in the midfield. Neither the cheapest nor the most expensive provider – but with no surprises on costs.

2 Digital purchase

18/20
Points
heysafe shines with a fully digital purchase process that takes only a few minutes. The modern interface guides you intuitively through the application: enter personal details, specify the rental property, set the deposit amount – done. The guarantee certificate is available as a PDF by email immediately after a successful credit check. No waiting for postal delivery, no back and forth – everything done within minutes. The credit check is Schufa-neutral (enquiry only, no negative entry). The user interface is modern in design and works well on a smartphone too. Scoring (18/20): An excellent, fast digital process with an immediate certificate. On the level of DepositDirect and therefore industry-leading. A small deduction for the missing app.

3 Scope of benefits

12/20
Points
heysafe offers a classic rent deposit guarantee under section 551 of the German Civil Code (BGB) – solid, legally compliant and accepted by most landlords. The guarantee fully replaces the cash deposit and frees up the deposit capital. However, extras such as tenant protection, legal advice or an objection period when a deposit is demanded are missing. In additional benefits, heysafe cannot keep up with kautionsfrei.de (tenant protection) or Baloise (objection period). For tenants who simply want a low-cost alternative to a cash deposit, the scope of benefits is entirely sufficient. Anyone who wants additional protection has to turn to a more expensive provider. Scoring (12/20): Solid basic service with no extras. Sufficient for the pure purpose of deposit exemption, but with no differentiating features in the scope of benefits.

4 Cancellation & flexibility

15/18
Points
The guarantee at heysafe can be cancelled at any time – with no minimum term and no notice period. This is standard at modern insurtech providers and a clear advantage over kautionsfrei.de, where cancellation is possible only annually. Cancellation is straightforward via the online customer account. After the landlord returns the guarantee certificate, payments stop and the contractual relationship ends. The flexible contract design is particularly suited to tenants in transitional living situations or with fixed-term tenancies. Scoring (15/18): Maximum flexibility with cancellation at any time. On the level of the best providers. A small deduction for the manual process of returning the certificate.

5 Service & support

7/12
Points
heysafe offers online support by email and contact form. As a young Berlin start-up (founded 2020), heysafe naturally has less customer history and fewer experience reports than established providers such as Baloise or kautionsfrei.de. The website is informative and modern in design, and the FAQ covers the most important questions. There is no telephone support – not unusual for an insurtech, but a disadvantage for customers who prefer personal advice. The still small number of Trustpilot and Google reviews makes it harder to give a final assessment of service quality. The existing reviews are predominantly positive. Scoring (7/12): Functional basic support with a modern online offering. Deduction for the missing telephone support, the shorter track record and the few independent reviews.
