Points

flatex is one of the oldest online brokers in Germany and is operated by flatexDEGIRO Bank AG. We rated the custody account using Kosten.org's custody account methodology and took all terms from the price pages and the schedule of prices and services (Preis- und Leistungsverzeichnis) at flatex.de.

Highlights of our flatex review

  • 80 out of 100 points in the custody account review
  • Securities custody account and cash account permanently free of charge
  • More than 2,500 ETF savings plans, all with no execution fee
  • A one-off order of 500 euros costs 5.90 euros plus third-party costs

1 Custody account fee

20/20
Points
According to the schedule of prices and services, flatex holds the securities custody account without a custody fee. The custody flat fee charged previously has been dropped, and there is no minimum order quantity and no other condition to which the fee waiver is tied. An incoming custody account transfer is not charged either. The cash account belonging to the custody account is also held without an account fee and serves as the settlement account. A current account at flatex or another bank is not required to use the custody account, and deposits and withdrawals are made via a reference account of your choice. No ongoing costs therefore arise on the account side. Scoring (20/20): Custody is unconditionally free of charge, which gives the full 15 points. A current account is not needed, which earns the full 5 points.

2 Trading costs

17/25
Points
Savings plan executions are free of charge at flatex, for the entire savings plan range and not just a promotional selection. An ETF savings plan of 400 euros is therefore executed without an execution fee, which earns the top mark in this category. For one-off investments, flatex is significantly more expensive than the neobrokers in our comparison. For a domestic order, the broker charges an order fee of 5.90 euros; at exchange venues, a third-party cost flat fee of 2.00 euros is added, so an order of 500 euros on Xetra comes to around 7.90 euros. For our rating, we use the pure order fee of 5.90 euros but show the additional costs explicitly. Trading via Xetra is available as standard, as is trading via the German regional exchanges and off-exchange partners. Scoring (17/25): The free savings plan earns the full 12 points. At 5.90 euros, the one-off investment of 500 euros falls in the band up to 7 euros and therefore scores 2 of 10 points. The Xetra connection earns the full 3 points.

3 Savings plan offering

16/20
Points
flatex states more than 2,500 savings-plan-eligible ETFs, and more than 6,000 securities available for savings plans when active funds are included. All ETF savings plans are executed without an execution fee, and there is no split into paid and free savings plans. Both the total number and the number of free savings plans are therefore above the methodology's top threshold. The minimum savings amount is 25 euros per execution. This is unusually high for such a broad offering and limits above all investors who want to spread small amounts across several ETFs. Execution intervals range from monthly to annually, and changes are free of charge. Scoring (16/20): More than 2,500 ETF savings plans reach the top band for the total number (8 points) and for free savings plans (7 points). The minimum savings amount of 25 euros only meets the lowest band and earns 1 of 5 points.

4 Product range

15/15
Points
The tradable universe is broad throughout at flatex. The broker states more than 2,500 tradable ETFs and more than 15,000 shares from German and international trading venues. Both figures are clearly above the methodology's upper thresholds. The offering is also complete for the other asset classes: bonds, certificates and warrants from numerous issuers are tradable, and since the introduction of crypto trading, crypto assets can also be traded directly through the flatex custody account, with fees of 0.6 or 0.7 per cent depending on order volume. flatex thus covers all three required classes. Scoring (15/15): More than 2,500 ETFs (6 points) and more than 15,000 shares (6 points) each meet the top band. Crypto, derivatives and bonds are all tradable, which earns the full 3 points.

5 Interest & extras

2/8
Points
The schedule of prices and services shows the credit interest rate on the cash account as subject to change at 0.00 per cent p.a. Uninvested money in the settlement account therefore earns no interest. A separate instant-access savings offer through which liquidity could earn interest is not part of the custody account offering. As a new-customer benefit, flatex advertises 20 trades with no order fee for new customers. Converted to the regular order fee, this corresponds to a value of up to around 118 euros, but it is a fee waiver and not a cash reward, and the benefit is only fully realised with corresponding trading activity. We therefore do not rate it with full marks but only at the middle band. Scoring (2/8): The credit interest rate of 0.00 per cent is below the entry band of 1 per cent, which gives 0 of 5 points. The new-customer benefit as a fee waiver is rated at 2 of 3 points.

6 Usability

6/8
Points
The flatex next app is available for iOS and Android. The rating is around 4.5 stars in the App Store and 4.3 stars in the Google Play Store. Since the methodology requires at least 4.5 stars on both platforms for full points, the criterion is only partly met. Besides the app, the established web platform with more extensive order types is available. On price data, flatex expressly advertises free real-time price data, including Xetra real-time prices, without activation and without additional costs. It should be noted that the schedule of prices and services also still lists an older model with a free allowance of real-time queries and a charge of 0.01 euro per further query. Since current product communication clearly promises free provision, we rate in favour of the current arrangement but point out the contradiction. Scoring (6/8): The app is available on both platforms but is below 4.5 stars in the Play Store, which gives 3 of 5 points. The free real-time prices earn the full 3 points.

7 Customer service & security

4/4
Points
flatex operates its own customer service hotline, shown on the contact page with a German landline number. Callers therefore pay no special charges, only the usual costs of their own provider. A contact form, an email address and a help section are also available. Telephone availability is a noticeable advantage over the neobrokers that offer written support only, at a broker with traditional order business and many order types. On the security side, statutory deposit protection (Einlagensicherung) applies to balances in the cash account, and securities are separated from the bank's assets as special assets (Sondervermögen). Scoring (4/4): Telephone support that can be reached free of charge is offered, which gives the full 4 points.

Conclusion: flatex review

80/100
Very good (2.0)

flatex scores with a free custody account, a very broad trading and savings plan offering and telephone support you can actually reach, which clearly sets the broker apart from the app-based providers. It gets expensive on one-off orders, where 5.90 euros plus a third-party cost flat fee is well above neobroker rates. Anyone who saves regularly and values choice and availability gets a well-rounded package here, whereas active individual buyers pay noticeably more.
