85/100
Points

ExpressVPN has been one of the most renowned VPN providers in the world for more than 15 years. The company, based in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) – a territory with no data retention laws – has set technological benchmarks with its TrustedServer technology and its in-house Lightway protocol. Since the takeover by Kape Technologies, however, there has also been discussion about possible conflicts of interest. In our 100-point rating we examine whether ExpressVPN is worth its money.

Highlights of our ExpressVPN review

  • ExpressVPN scores a strong 85/100 points in our rating – premium quality.
  • TrustedServer technology: all servers run exclusively on RAM.
  • Lightway protocol with open-source code for maximum transparency.
  • Basic from €2.49 a month (2 years + 4 months), renewal €79.95 a year.

1 Security & privacy

27/30
Points
ExpressVPN uses AES-256 encryption in combination with its own Lightway protocol, which is published as open source on GitHub and was audited by the security firm Cure53. OpenVPN and IKEv2 are also available as proven alternatives. The Lightway protocol is based on wolfSSL and is leaner than WireGuard, which leads to faster connection set-up times. TrustedServer technology is the heart of the security architecture: every server runs exclusively in RAM, without any hard drives. On every restart, the entire operating system is reloaded from a central, read-only image. This architecture was independently audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Cure53; according to its own statements, ExpressVPN most recently had its no-logs policy audited by KPMG in 2025. The registered office in the British Virgin Islands offers strong legal protection – there is no obligation to retain data and there are no extradition treaties. In practice, ExpressVPN's no-logs policy was demonstrably confirmed in 2017, when the Turkish authorities tried to seize data after a high-profile criminal case – the server contained no usable information. Scoring (27/30): First-class security with audited infrastructure and a proven no-logs policy. A deduction for the controversial takeover by Kape Technologies, which raises questions about long-term independence.

2 Speed & performance

17/20
Points
With the lean Lightway protocol, ExpressVPN is designed for fast connections and quick connection set-up – usually much faster than with OpenVPN. How much speed is actually lost depends on your line, server distance and load; our grading is an editorial assessment, not our own series of measurements. Streaming support is one of the main points ExpressVPN advertises. There is no guarantee: Netflix and others continually block detected VPN addresses. Test your preferred service within the 30-day money-back period. On distant servers (for example overseas), speed and response time naturally fall – for streaming and browsing that is usually enough, but for competitive gaming nearby servers are the better choice. Scoring (17/20): A fast protocol and a streaming focus. A slight deduction compared with NordVPN, because ExpressVPN offers fewer special servers and no public server overview.

3 Servers & locations

15/18
Points
According to its server overview, ExpressVPN operates servers in 113 countries – one of the best coverages in the industry. Some of the locations are virtual locations; ExpressVPN marks them on its website. When it comes to special servers, ExpressVPN is more minimalist than NordVPN: there are no dedicated Double VPN or Onion Over VPN servers. On the other hand, all servers are automatically optimised for P2P, and there is obfuscated-server functionality via the OpenVPN protocol for regions that block VPNs, such as China and the United Arab Emirates. ExpressVPN does not publish a total number of servers; according to its own statements, the provider relies on high-performance servers rather than sheer numbers. Scoring (15/18): Excellent country coverage with 113 countries, but no published server count and fewer types of special server than the competition.

4 Features & ease of use

16/20
Points
ExpressVPN offers apps for all the common platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Chromebook, Amazon Fire TV and router firmware (Aircove). The apps are elegantly designed and extremely user-friendly – a large “on” button and a location drop-down are enough for most users. The Basic plan allows 10 simultaneous device connections, and the top “Express Pro” level up to 14 – enough even for families. Split tunnelling is available on Windows, macOS and Android, but not on iOS. The Threat Manager blocks trackers and malicious websites but is less comprehensive than NordVPN's Threat Protection. Customer service can be reached around the clock via live chat and email. Support replies mostly in English. The extensive knowledge base with set-up guides for many devices is exemplary. Scoring (16/20): Outstanding ease of use and 24/7 support. Deductions because more devices and extras are only included in more expensive plans, for the missing split tunnelling on iOS and for the limited Threat Manager.

5 Price & plans

10/12
Points
ExpressVPN has cut its prices significantly and organised its plans into levels (Basic to Express Pro). The cheapest plan, Basic, costs €2.49 a month in the 2-year promotion (2 years + 4 months) – €69.72 is due upfront. On the annual plan (12 + 3 months) it is €4.49 a month, and monthly €12.99 (as of 30 October 2026, possibly plus VAT according to the pricing page). After the first term, Basic renews at €79.95 a year – a comparatively moderate price jump (NordVPN Basic: €139.08 a year). There is also a 30-day money-back guarantee. There is no free plan. In the first term, ExpressVPN Basic is therefore on a level with Surfshark (€2.49) and just above CyberGhost (€2.19). Anyone who wants more devices (up to 14) or extras has to book a higher level. Scoring (10/12): A low-cost entry, a moderate renewal price and a 30-day guarantee. A deduction because extras and more devices are only included in more expensive plans and there is no free version.

Conclusion: ExpressVPN review

85/100
Very good (1.8)

With 85 out of 100 points, ExpressVPN earns its premium status. The combination of audited security, outstanding apps and a streaming focus is first class. Since the price cut, Basic from €2.49 a month (2 years + 4 months) is no longer an expensive offer, and renewal at €79.95 a year also remains moderate.
