Deezer is the French challenger with HiFi quality, a built-in Shazam alternative (SongCatcher) and the innovative Flow algorithm.

Highlights of our Deezer review

  • HiFi FLAC quality at no extra charge
  • SongCatcher identifies songs in real time
  • Flow – a personalised endless stream
  • Lyrics for almost all songs

1 Music catalogue & content

26/35
Points
Deezer quotes around 120 million songs and is therefore, in sheer song count, level with or above Spotify and Apple Music (100 million+ each). All the major German and international labels are represented, and everything from pop to classical is covered. There is a podcast offering, but it is considerably smaller than at Spotify. Deezer focuses more on music and only began integrating podcasts late. Audiobooks are also available, though with a limited catalogue. Deezer scores with editorially curated playlists and the “Moodboard” concept, which sorts music by moods and activities. For German users there are special local playlists and charts. Scoring (26/35): A large catalogue that is entirely sufficient for everyday use. A deduction compared with Spotify and Apple Music for the weaker podcast offering and less well-known exclusive content.

2 Audio quality

17/20
Points
In the Premium plan, Deezer offers HiFi quality in FLAC format (16-bit/44.1 kHz) – equivalent to CD quality. FLAC is lossless; however, Spotify (up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz) and the other big services except YouTube Music now also offer lossless at no extra charge. True hi-res audio (24-bit) as at Apple Music or Tidal is missing, though. For most listeners with standard headphones, the difference between FLAC CD quality and hi-res is marginal, but audiophiles with high-end equipment will notice it. FLAC quality is included at no extra charge in all paid plans (Premium, Duo, Family, Student). Scoring (17/20): Very good audio quality thanks to lossless FLAC in the standard plan. A deduction for the missing hi-res audio and spatial audio that Apple Music and Tidal offer.

3 Features & algorithms

15/20
Points
Deezer's core feature is “Flow” – a personalised endless music stream that mixes familiar favourites with new discoveries. Flow works surprisingly well and is one of the better discovery tools on the market, but it does not match Spotify's Discover Weekly for accuracy. “SongCatcher” is Deezer's integrated Shazam alternative: the app identifies songs via the microphone in real time and is built directly into search – no need to switch to a separate app. Lyrics are displayed in sync for almost all songs. Deezer also offers a “Blind Test” game mode in which users guess songs from short clips – an entertaining social feature that hardly any competitor offers. Scoring (15/20): Good unique features (Flow, SongCatcher, Blind Test), solid music discovery. The general recommendation algorithms, however, remain below Spotify's level.

4 Price & plans

13/15
Points
Deezer offers a free ad-supported version (restricted), Premium at €11.99 a month (including FLAC HiFi), Duo at €15.99 a month (2 people), Family at €19.99 a month (up to 6 people) and Student at €5.99 a month. On an annual plan Premium costs €107.99 – equivalent to €9.00 a month and therefore around 25% cheaper than paying monthly. That puts Deezer's individual price €1 below Spotify (€12.99) and level with Apple Music and YouTube Music (€11.99 each); at €5.99 the student plan is among the cheapest. FLAC quality is included at no extra charge in all paid plans. The free tier is functional but, because of the forced shuffle on mobile, less useful than Spotify's free version. On desktop you can also pick songs directly in the free tier. Scoring (13/15): Competitive prices, with FLAC HiFi in the standard plan as a bonus. A deduction for the more restrictive free tier compared with Spotify.

5 Platforms & compatibility

7/10
Points
Deezer is available on iOS, Android, the web and as a desktop app for Windows and macOS. No native Linux support, but the web player works. CarPlay, Android Auto, Alexa and Google Home are supported. The app quality is good but occasionally seems slightly less polished than Spotify's or Apple Music's. Offline downloads are possible, and the Sonos integration works reliably. Deezer has narrower device compatibility than Spotify but covers all the important platforms. Smart TV apps are available for Samsung and LG. Scoring (7/10): Good basic coverage of all the important platforms. A deduction for missing Linux, a less polished app experience and less smart-home support than Spotify.

Conclusion: Deezer review

78/100
Good (2.1)
