Points

CyberGhost VPN is one of the well-known VPN services. Founded in 2011 and based in Bucharest, the company scores with servers in 100 countries, the lowest entry price in our comparison and particularly beginner-friendly operation. Since the takeover by Kape Technologies in 2017, however, there have been discussions similar to those around ExpressVPN. In our 100-point rating we examine whether CyberGhost is the right choice for everyday use.

Highlights of our CyberGhost VPN review

  • CyberGhost scores 78/100 points in our rating – a solid all-rounder.
  • From €2.19 a month (2 years + 2 months) – the cheapest entry in the comparison.
  • 45-day money-back guarantee for the multi-month plans.
  • Servers specially optimised for streaming.

1 Security & privacy

22/30
Points
CyberGhost uses AES-256 encryption and supports WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2. The no-logs policy is backed up by quarterly transparency reports and, according to CyberGhost, was audited by Deloitte in 2025 – as with NordVPN and Surfshark. The registered office in Romania is advantageous from a data protection perspective: the country has no data retention laws and is not a member of the 5/9/14 Eyes intelligence alliances. CyberGhost operates its own NoSpy servers in a private data centre in Romania, which only its own staff can access. The kill switch and DNS leak protection are available on all platforms. CyberGhost also offers a content and ad blocker, which is, however, less comprehensive than NordVPN's Threat Protection. Belonging to Kape Technologies – a company with a controversial past in browser extensions – remains a point of discussion in the security community. Scoring (22/30): Solid encryption, a Deloitte audit (according to the provider) and an advantageous location in Romania. A clear deduction for Kape ownership, the status as a 14 Eyes country (EU) and the shorter audit history compared with NordVPN.

2 Speed & performance

14/20
Points
With WireGuard, CyberGhost delivers decent speeds on nearby servers. How much speed is lost depends on your line, server distance and load; our grading (“fast”) is an editorial assessment, not our own series of measurements. For streaming, CyberGhost offers specially optimised servers labelled with the service they work with. There is no guarantee: streaming services continually block detected VPN addresses. Try your preferred service within the money-back period (45 days on multi-month plans, 14 days on the monthly plan). Over long distances, speed naturally falls. For gamers, CyberGhost offers dedicated gaming servers. For competitive games, nearby servers are the better choice, since every VPN detour increases response time. Scoring (14/20): Decent speeds and streaming-optimised servers. Deductions because CyberGhost has no protocol of its own such as NordLynx or Lightway and drops off more over long distances.

3 Servers & locations

17/18
Points
CyberGhost operates servers in 100 countries; the provider's website gives no reliable total number of servers. Coverage extends from Europe across the Americas to Asia and Africa. The categorised special servers are particularly practical: CyberGhost offers dedicated servers for streaming (labelled with the supported service such as “Netflix US” or “BBC iPlayer”), gaming (low latency) and torrenting (P2P-optimised). That takes server selection completely out of beginners' hands and makes CyberGhost particularly beginner-friendly. The NoSpy servers in CyberGhost's own data centre in Romania offer additional protection for particularly privacy-conscious users. Virtual locations are clearly marked. Scoring (17/18): Broad country coverage with excellent categorisation of servers. A minimal deduction because no server count is documented and the quality of individual servers can vary.

4 Features & ease of use

16/20
Points
CyberGhost is one of the most user-friendly VPNs in our comparison. The apps on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Fire TV are clearly laid out and require no technical knowledge. The “Best location” function automatically chooses the fastest server, and the categorised server lists make manual selection child's play. Up to 7 devices can be connected at the same time – fewer than with NordVPN, ExpressVPN Basic and Proton VPN Plus (10 each) and Surfshark's unlimited offer. Split tunnelling is available on Android and Windows but missing on macOS and iOS. The apps offer Smart Rules, which let you configure automatic VPN connections on certain Wi-Fi networks. Customer service can be reached around the clock via live chat and email. The extensive Help Center with set-up guides for many devices and platforms is very well done. Scoring (16/20): Very good ease of use with Smart Rules and categorised servers. Deductions for the missing split tunnelling on Apple devices and the limit of 7 devices.

5 Price & plans

9/12
Points
CyberGhost offers very competitive prices: the 2-year plan (2 years + 2 months) works out at €2.19 a month – €56.94 is due upfront, and renewal also remains moderate at €56.94 a year. That is the lowest entry price in our comparison. The 6-month plan is €6.99 a month and the monthly plan €11.99; there is no 1-year plan (as of 30 October 2026, possibly plus VAT according to the pricing page). The multi-month plans come with a 45-day money-back guarantee – longer than the 30 days at NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN. On the monthly plan it is only 14 days. There is no free plan. For the service on offer, the value for money is good, even though CyberGhost lags behind NordVPN and Surfshark on number of devices and protocols. Scoring (9/12): The cheapest 2-year plan in the comparison, moderate renewal and a 45-day guarantee. A deduction for the expensive monthly plan with only a 14-day guarantee, the missing 1-year plan and the missing free tier.

Conclusion: CyberGhost VPN review

78/100
Good (2.1)

With 78 out of 100 points, CyberGhost is a solid VPN for beginners and the price-conscious: the entry from €2.19 a month is the cheapest in the comparison, and renewal also remains moderate. The categorised servers and the 45-day guarantee are genuine pluses. Anyone who wants to protect many devices or use specialist functions is better served by NordVPN or Surfshark.
