CosmosDirekt is a large direct insurer with smartphone insurance from €4.99/month. Instant cover and vandalism protection are its strengths – but only for new devices.

Highlights of our CosmosDirekt Handyversicherung review

  • Instant cover with no waiting period
  • Vandalism included
  • Well-known direct insurer
  • Handling errors covered

1 Scope of cover

24/35
Points
CosmosDirekt covers screen breakage, water damage, drop damage, vandalism and handling errors. The vandalism protection and the coverage of handling errors are special features that hardly any other provider offers. This applies, for example, if the smartphone is damaged by wilful destruction by third parties. However, a central feature is missing: battery wear is not covered. For modern smartphones whose battery noticeably deteriorates after 2-3 years, that is a relevant exclusion. Theft cover can optionally be added. Worldwide cover is included as standard and applies to trips of up to 3 months' duration. Scoring (24/35): Good scope of cover with the bonus feature of vandalism protection. Significant deduction for the missing battery cover, which Hepster includes.

2 Price & terms

14/20
Points
CosmosDirekt offers smartphone insurance from 4.99 euros/month and is therefore in the mid price segment between the cheap insurtechs (Hepster from 2.50 euros) and the expensive large insurers (ARAG from 9.90 euros). The minimum term is 12 months, after which the contract can be cancelled monthly. The biggest drawback: the excess of 10% of the purchase price is always payable and cannot be opted out of. On an iPhone 16 Pro Max (approx. 1,599 euros), that means a 160-euro excess in the event of a claim, a considerable amount. At Hepster the excess can be reduced to 0%. As a direct insurer, CosmosDirekt dispenses with intermediary commissions and passes the saving on to customers in part. Scoring (14/20): Mid-range price with the significant drawback of the non-optional 10% excess. Compared directly with Hepster (flexible excess from 0%), a clear disadvantage.

3 Devices & compatibility

10/20
Points
CosmosDirekt's biggest weakness: only new devices up to a maximum of 6 months old are insured. Second-hand devices, refurbished smartphones and older devices are excluded completely. This is the most restrictive age limit of all the providers rated. Anyone who does not insure their smartphone immediately after buying it has no chance at CosmosDirekt. At Hepster there is no age limit, and at ERGO devices up to 36 months old can be insured. Worldwide cover also applies to new devices bought abroad, a small advantage for frequent travellers. Scoring (10/20): A strong restriction on device age that excludes a large share of potential customers. The 6-month limit is the most restrictive in the whole comparison.

4 Claims handling

11/15
Points
Instant cover applies from the day the contract is taken out, with no waiting period. Claims are reported easily online via the CosmosDirekt customer portal. Reporting by telephone is also possible. Processing time is 5-10 working days. CosmosDirekt works with certified repair workshops and offers reimbursement of the current value in the event of a total loss. However, the 10% excess is always payable in the event of a claim and noticeably reduces the actual reimbursement amount. On a repair costing 300 euros, you still pay approx. 160 euros (10% of the purchase price) yourself. Scoring (11/15): Quick and uncomplicated claims reporting with instant cover. Deduction for the compulsory excess, which makes every claim more expensive.

5 Service & support

7/10
Points
As an established direct insurer, CosmosDirekt offers telephone support and email advice. As a pure direct insurer there are no branches, so the personal on-site advice available at ERGO is missing. As part of the Generali group, the CosmosDirekt brand enjoys high awareness and trust in Germany. Telephone availability is ensured at extended business hours, and the online portal allows extensive self-service. The Trustpilot rating of 3.6 stars is solid, but well below Hepster's 4.3 stars, which may indicate lower customer satisfaction. Scoring (7/10): Solid support by telephone and email with the trustworthiness of a Generali subsidiary. Deduction for the missing branch advice and the somewhat weaker customer reviews.

Pros & cons at a glance

Pros

  • Instant cover
  • Vandalism included
  • Well-known brand
  • Handling errors

Cons

  • New devices up to 6 months only
  • Excess always 10%
  • No battery cover
  • No second-hand devices

Conclusion: CosmosDirekt Handyversicherung review

66/100
Good (2.7)

CosmosDirekt is a good option for owners of new devices who prefer a well-known brand. The restriction to devices no more than 6 months old and the permanent excess are the biggest drawbacks.
