Coinbase is a US crypto exchange listed on Nasdaq that has handled its EU business since June 2025 through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. with MiCAR authorisation from the Luxembourg CSSF. We examined the provider under our crypto methodology: trading costs, security and regulation, offer, platform, and taxes and reporting. A rating under the depot methodology would be out of place here, because Coinbase neither executes Xetra orders nor offers ETF savings plans.

Highlights of our Coinbase review

  • Coinbase scores 74 out of 100 points in our rating.
  • MiCAR authorisation from the CSSF Luxembourg dated 20 June 2025; Coinbase Germany GmbH had already held the first BaFin permit for crypto custody business at all in 2021.
  • According to the provider, around 98 percent of customer holdings are in cold storage, supplemented by address whitelisting and the Vault function with a 48-hour withdrawal delay.
  • The trading fee is the weak point: in the entry tier of Coinbase Advanced a 1.20 percent taker fee applies, and in simple buy mode 1.49 percent plus spread.

1 Trading costs

11/30
Points
Coinbase runs two pricing models. In simple buy mode, a fee of around 1.49 percent per trade applies plus a spread of roughly 0.5 to 1.0 percent. On the Coinbase Advanced trading venue, a volume-dependent scale applies, which starts at 0.60 percent maker and 1.20 percent taker in the entry tier. Only from US$10,000 of 30-day volume does the taker fee fall to 0.40 percent, and from US$50,000 to 0.25 percent (as of 09/2026). On deposits and withdrawals, by contrast, Coinbase is cheap: SEPA transfers in euros are free in both directions. The spread is disclosed by Coinbase but, in simple mode, is above the 0.5 percent mark from which we award the full score. Scoring (11/30): For the taker fee there are 0 out of 15 points, because even the cheaper trading venue in the entry tier, at 1.20 percent, is above the 1.00 percent threshold. The stated but too high spread brings 4 out of 8 points. Free SEPA deposits and withdrawals give the full 7 points.

2 Security & regulation

28/28
Points
Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. received MiCAR authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider from the Luxembourg CSSF on 20 June 2025 and now serves all 27 EU states from one place. Previously, Coinbase Germany GmbH held the BaFin permit for crypto custody business granted in 2021, the first of its kind in Germany. The regulatory standing for the German market is thus clearly verified. On custody, Coinbase states that it holds around 98 percent of customer holdings offline in cold storage; holdings are kept separately, and as a listed company Coinbase is subject to audited and published financial statements. Insurance against cybercrime covers part of the assets held, but not losses from unauthorised access to your own account. At account level, two-factor authentication including hardware keys, address whitelisting and the Vault function with a 48-hour withdrawal delay are available. Scoring (28/28): The MiCAR authorisation gives the full 12 points. Cold storage, separate custody and published, audited proofs bring 10 out of 10 points. Two-factor authentication plus whitelisting plus withdrawal lock give the full 6 points.

3 Offer

16/18
Points
In the DACH region, Coinbase lists over 340 tradable crypto assets and thus has one of the broadest offers on the market. Recurring purchases can be set up daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly from €10 and work in the web interface as in the app. Staking is available, but for European retail customers is limited to a smaller selection of coins. The weakness lies in the euro pairs. On Coinbase Advanced, a euro order book exists for only a fraction of the listed assets; reports cite around 44 coins with a euro pair compared with nearly 400 tradable underlying assets in total. Anyone who wants to buy outside this selection must take the detour via US dollars or a dollar stablecoin – with an additional trading fee and an additional taxable event. Scoring (16/18): Over 340 crypto assets give the full 8 points. For the euro pairs we award 3 out of 5 points, because only the most important assets are directly tradable in euros. Savings plan and staking together bring the full 5 points.

4 Platform & usability

12/14
Points
Coinbase offers a German-language web interface as well as apps for iOS and Android, which are fully available in Germany. On Coinbase Advanced, market, limit, stop-limit, bracket and trailing-stop-loss orders are available; the range is therefore clearly larger than with pure broker models. Coinbase runs a public status page at status.coinbase.com with maintenance announcements and incident history. Individual incidents are documented repeatedly in this history, including with deposit and withdrawal networks. We cannot derive permanently trouble-free operation from this. Scoring (12/14): A German-language interface plus apps for both systems give the full 6 points. The broad range of orders brings the full 4 points. For availability we award 2 out of 4 points: a status page exists, but with documented individual disruptions.

5 Taxes & reporting

7/10
Points
Coinbase does not provide a finished tax report tailored to the German tax return. Users generate a transaction history under Settings and Reports and pass it to tax tools; Coinbase documents this route and works with tax software providers. Since 1 January 2026, Coinbase has also reported transaction data to the tax authorities under automatic exchange of information. On data export, Coinbase is well equipped: the complete transaction history can be downloaded as CSV, and there is also a documented API through which tax tools collect the data automatically. Scoring (7/10): For the tax report there are 3 out of 6 points, because Coinbase supplies no finished document of its own, only the connection to tax tools. CSV export and API together give the full 4 points.

Pros & cons at a glance

  • Over 340 tradable crypto assets and high liquidity
  • SEPA deposits and withdrawals in euros free
  • German-language interface, apps for iOS and Android, recurring purchases from €10

Cons

  • Most expensive provider in the rating field: 1.20 percent taker fee in the entry tier, 1.49 percent plus spread in simple buy mode
  • A euro order book exists for only a small share of the listed coins, otherwise a detour via dollar stablecoins
  • No finished tax report for the German tax return

  • Status page repeatedly documents individual disruptions

Conclusion: Coinbase review

74/100
Good (2.3)

Coinbase scores 74 out of 100 points and is therefore in the upper middle of the field. Regulation, custody and breadth of offer are first-class; trading costs are not – anyone who buys regularly pays considerably more here than at the European competitors. The provider suits investors for whom supervision and security architecture matter more than the fee, not cost-sensitive frequent traders.
