CapTrader is a Düsseldorf-based introducing broker that arranges custody accounts at Interactive Brokers, where genuine securities are held in the customer's ownership. Trading runs via the Trader Workstation and the CapTrader app on more than 170 exchanges, including XETRA (IBIS), Tradegate and Gettex. CapTrader does not offer ETF and fund savings plans in the broker custody account itself, but through a separate investment custody account with its partner FNZ (European Bank for Financial Services GmbH).

Highlights of our CapTrader review

  • 67 out of 100 points – Good (2.6) in the custody account review
  • Custody free of charge, XETRA orders from 2.00 euros
  • More than 20,000 ETFs tradable on 28 exchanges in 14 countries
  • Savings plans only in the paid FNZ partner custody account from 20 euros a year

1 Custody account fee

20/20
Points
CapTrader holds the custody account and the associated settlement account without an ongoing fee. On the terms page, account management and custody are expressly shown as free of charge, and no minimum activity or inactivity fee is listed. One qualification applies: to open an account, CapTrader requires an initial deposit of at least 2,000 euros. This hurdle concerns access to the custody account, not custody itself. A separate current account is not required. The settlement account is part of the Interactive Brokers account and is held in several currencies; deposits and withdrawals are made by SEPA transfer. Note that from the second withdrawal per month, 1 euro (SEPA) or 8 euros (international transfer) is charged. Scoring (20/20): Custody is free of charge without condition (15 points). An additional current account is not needed, the settlement account is included in the custody account (5 points).

2 Trading costs

18/25
Points
For German and European shares, CapTrader charges, according to its terms page, 0.1 per cent of the order volume with a minimum of 2.00 euros per order. A one-off investment of 500 euros therefore costs 2.00 euros because the minimum fee applies. ETF orders in Germany also cost from 2.00 euros, ETFs in the USA from 2.00 US dollars. US shares are charged at 1 US cent per share with a minimum of 2.00 US dollars, bonds with a minimum of 8.00 euros (Europe) or 10.00 US dollars (USA), warrants and certificates from 6.00 euros. Orders placed by telephone are only possible to close a position and cost 30 euros or 30 US dollars. Savings plan execution does not run through the broker custody account but through the FNZ investment custody account. The FNZ schedule of prices and services (as of 01.01.2024), provided by CapTrader on its own domain, shows transactions ordered online as free in principle, but charges a separate transaction fee of 0.20 per cent of the transaction volume for ETFs. A savings plan instalment of 400 euros therefore costs 0.80 euros in execution fees. In addition there is the quarterly custody fee of the FNZ custody account, which is rated under the savings plan offering category. XETRA is tradable via CapTrader: the trading venue overview lists XETRA (IBIS) with ETFs, indices and shares and trading hours of 09:00 to 17:40, as well as Tradegate (TGATE) and Gettex. Scoring (18/25): The 400-euro ETF savings plan costs 0.80 euros and therefore falls in the band up to 1 euro (10 of 12 points). The 500-euro one-off investment costs 2.00 euros and falls in the band up to 3 euros (5 of 10 points). XETRA orders are possible (3 points).

3 Savings plan offering

8/20
Points
CapTrader offers savings plans exclusively through an additional investment custody account with its partner FNZ. According to the savings plan page, more than 1,300 savings-plan-eligible ETFs are available there, 94 of them sustainable ETFs under Articles 8 and 9 SFDR (the EU sustainable finance disclosure regulation), and more than 7,000 savings-plan-eligible funds and ETFs in total from a universe of more than 8,000 funds from more than 230 companies. Fractional units are held, and savings plans can be transferred from other providers. There are no free ETF savings plans. The FNZ custody account costs, depending on the model, 20.00 euros a year (flex basic, one custody position), 36.00 euros (flex select, up to two positions), 48.00 euros (flex standard, up to 99 positions) or 68.00 euros (flex premium). For minors, the custody fee is waived. In addition, the ETF transaction fee of 0.20 per cent mentioned above applies. According to the footnote, the 75 per cent discount granted by CapTrader expressly refers to the purchase of investment funds, not ETFs. The minimum savings amount is 10 euros; for the FNZ mini savings plan for children and young people, instalments range between 10 and 50 euros. Scoring (8/20): More than 1,300 savings-plan-eligible ETFs reach the band from 1,000 (5 of 8 points). Free ETF savings plans cannot be verified – on the contrary, a custody fee and ETF transaction fee apply (0 of 7 points). The minimum savings amount of 10 euros falls in the band up to 10 euros (3 of 5 points).

4 Product range

14/15
Points
The offering is exceptionally broad for a retail investor broker. CapTrader states more than 1.2 million tradable securities, access to more than 170 exchanges in 37 countries, share trading on 80 exchanges in 34 countries, more than 1 million bonds and around 37,000 funds. Fractional share trading is supported. On ETFs, CapTrader shows more than 20,000 tradable ETFs on 28 exchanges in 14 countries, including short and leveraged ETFs as well as options on ETFs. Derivatives are fully covered with futures, options, warrants, certificates and CFDs, as are bonds. Genuine cryptocurrencies, on the other hand, are not on offer. On its own crypto page, CapTrader states in so many words that customers cannot buy genuine, withdrawable cryptocurrencies at CapTrader; participation is exclusively via futures, ETFs, ETNs, funds or shares. Scoring (14/15): More than 20,000 ETFs (6 points) and shares on 80 exchanges in 34 countries well above the 7,500 threshold (6 points). Of the three asset classes crypto, derivatives and bonds, only two are directly tradable, with cryptocurrencies only in derivative form (2 of 3 points).

5 Interest & extras

0/8
Points
At the time of retrieval on 15.09.2026, CapTrader's interest page shows a credit interest rate of 0.729 per cent p.a. for euro balances, and only for amounts above 10,000 euros. The first tier from 0 to 10,000 euros earns 0 per cent interest. US dollar balances earn 2.13 per cent p.a. A retail investor with a typical euro balance therefore receives, arithmetically, significantly less than 1 per cent. CapTrader does not advertise a bonus for new customers. The refer-a-customer programme pays 75 euros (initial deposit from 2,000 euros), 150 euros (from 25,000 euros) or 250 euros (company custody account from 25,000 euros) – but according to the provider's page, this reward is credited to the referring existing customer, not to the new customer. A generally accessible new-customer bonus cannot be found on the CapTrader pages. Scoring (0/8): The euro credit interest rate of 0.729 per cent is below the 1 per cent threshold and is not paid at all on the first 10,000 euros (0 of 5 points). A new-customer bonus cannot be verified; the referral reward goes to the referrer (0 of 3 points).

6 Usability

3/8
Points
CapTrader provides a trading app for iOS and Android, plus the Trader Workstation for Windows, macOS and Linux and the browser-based Client Portal. The app offers a portfolio overview, order book, price alerts, market scanner and trading in shares, options, futures and currencies. CapTrader does not publish its own star rating from the app stores on its own pages; it merely refers to a test win in the broker test by Börse Online. On price data, CapTrader is restrictive. The market data page shows delayed prices as free, while real-time data is generally chargeable. Only snapshots at 0.01 or 0.03 US dollars, up to a value of 1 US dollar per month, are free of charge; a regular market data subscription also requires account capitalisation of 500 US dollars. Scoring (3/8): Apps for iOS and Android are verified, the provider does not publish a star rating, so the band below 4.5 stars is applied (3 of 5 points). Real-time prices are not consistently available free of charge (0 of 3 points).

7 Customer service & security

4/4
Points
CapTrader operates a hotline expressly described as free of charge on 0800 8723370 and an international number on 00800 08723370, plus email support and a help centre. Support is provided from Düsseldorf in German. For assessing security, the introducing broker status is decisive. In its own disclaimer, CapTrader points out that it does not execute orders in financial instruments, does not advise on financial instruments and does not hold client assets. The custody account and account are held at Interactive Brokers; CapTrader is subject to BaFin supervision only for the separately agreed asset management (managed accounts). Investors should therefore know that deposit protection does not run through the German compensation scheme. Scoring (4/4): Free telephone support via a 0800 number is verified on the provider's page (4 points).

67/100
Good (2.6)

Anyone who is looking mainly for a free ETF savings plan, interest-bearing cash and free real-time prices, on the other hand, pays noticeably more here.
