Billomat is one of the oldest cloud accounting providers in Germany. In our review, we examine whether the veteran can still keep up.

Highlights of our Billomat review

  • Billomat scores 74/100 points in our review – solid but no longer up to date.
  • More than 15 years of experience in the market.
  • Strong API for developers and integrations.
  • Made in Germany with a server location in Freiburg.

1 Features (21/30 points)

21/30
Points
Billomat offers all the basic functions for cloud accounting: invoicing, quotes, delivery notes and cash-basis profit calculation (Einnahmen-Überschuss-Rechnung). As one of the oldest providers on the market, its functionality is tried and tested and stable – but it lacks the spirit of innovation of newer competitors. Receipt capture works reliably but relies on classic OCR text recognition rather than modern AI algorithms. E-invoices are supported, but not on all plans. A real highlight is the powerful API, which offers developers extensive integration possibilities – a relevant advantage for businesses with their own systems. Scoring (21/30): Solid basic functions, but behind the competition on AI receipt capture and e-invoices. The strong API is a plus for developers.

2 Usability (17/25 points)

17/25
Points
Billomat's user interface is the biggest shortcoming in our review. The design dates from its founding in 2007 and has only been modernised here and there since. In direct comparison with sevDesk or Lexware Office, the interface looks old-fashioned and less intuitive. That does not mean Billomat is hard to use – navigation is logical and experienced users find their way around quickly. However, modern UX elements such as drag and drop, intelligent search functions or contextual help are missing. The mobile app exists but also lags behind the competition. Scoring (17/25): A functional but outdated interface. Long-standing users are used to it, but for new customers getting started is more pleasant with more modern alternatives.

3 Pricing (18/25 points)

18/25
Points
In terms of price, Billomat positions itself in the upper midfield. The Starter plan begins at €9 a month and gives access to all basic functions. For the full range of features including DATEV export and extended API access, however, the Business plan at €29/month is required – comparatively expensive. A free 14-day trial lets you try it out. A permanently free plan is missing, which is a disadvantage given the competition (Papierkram). With annual payment there is a discount that reduces costs somewhat. Scoring (18/25): Acceptable value for money, but somewhat too expensive for the range of features offered compared with more modern competitors.

4 Support (15/20 points)

15/20
Points
Billomat's support is competent but not always quick to reach. Telephone support is available – a plus compared with purely online providers – although users report longer waiting times at peak periods. Email support usually responds within 24-48 hours. The knowledge base is comprehensive and covers all common questions. Video tutorials and webinars complement the offering. However, a live chat for quick queries is missing, which should be standard in 2026. Scoring (15/20): Solid support with a telephone option, but longer waiting times and the missing live chat prevent a higher rating.
