ARAG is the premium provider among phone insurers. Theft cover is included as standard – but it is also the most expensive plan on the market.

Highlights of our ARAG Handyversicherung review

  • Theft cover included as standard
  • Cover limit up to €5,000
  • Also usable for other electronics
  • Well-known German insurer

1 Scope of cover

26/35
Points
ARAG Elektronik-Schutz Premium covers all standard claims: screen breakage, water damage, drop damage and power surge damage. The unique selling point: theft cover is included as standard. At all the other providers rated, theft cover costs extra or is not available at all. The premium character also shows in its versatility: the policy can be used not only for smartphones but also for tablets, laptops and other electronic devices. That makes the ARAG plan interesting for users with several high-value devices. However, battery wear coverage, a feature that Hepster offers as one of the few, is missing. For users who use their smartphone intensively and need a battery replacement after 2 years, that is a relevant exclusion. Scoring (26/35): Good scope of cover with the important standard theft protection. Deduction for the missing battery cover and the narrower overall scope of benefits compared with Hepster.

2 Price & terms

8/20
Points
At from 9.90 euros/month, ARAG is the most expensive provider in the comparison, almost four times as expensive as Hepster's basic cover (2.50 euros). The high price is partly explained by the included theft cover, which costs extra at other providers. The fixed excess of 50 euros per claim is always payable and cannot be opted out of. With more frequent, smaller claims, it adds up quickly. The minimum term is 24 months, after which cancellation is annual only. If you add theft cover as an option at Hepster, Hepster still costs approx. 40% less than ARAG. For the average user, ARAG's value for money is therefore hard to justify. Scoring (8/20): By far the most expensive provider, with a fixed 50-euro excess and a long 24-month commitment. Value for money is weak compared with the cheaper insurtech competition.

3 Devices & compatibility

10/20
Points
ARAG insures only devices up to a maximum of 12 months old, more restrictive than ERGO (36 months) and much more restrictive than Hepster (unlimited). Second-hand devices and refurbished smartphones are excluded. Worldwide cover is included and applies permanently, not just for limited travel periods. The ability to use the policy for other electronic devices is a plus for multi-device users. However, the option to bundle several devices under one policy is missing. Each device needs its own contract, which quickly becomes expensive with several devices. Scoring (10/20): The restrictive 12-month age limit excludes most of the second-hand market. Multi-device use is a plus but is put into perspective by the high individual prices.

4 Claims handling

11/15
Points
Claims are reported professionally through the ARAG online portal, by telephone or at an ARAG branch office. Instant cover applies from the day the contract is taken out, with no waiting period. ARAG works with an established network of repair partners and, for theft, offers reimbursement up to the agreed cover limit. The 50-euro excess is, however, payable on every claim. Processing times are professional, but not the fastest: at 7-14 working days, ARAG is at the upper end. There is no express option for urgent cases. Scoring (11/15): Reliable and professional handling with the trust of a large insurer. Deduction for the compulsory 50-euro excess and the somewhat longer processing times.

5 Service & support

8/10
Points
ARAG offers the full infrastructure of an established large German insurer: telephone support, email advice and personal on-site advice at ARAG branch offices nationwide. That is the gold standard in insurance service. ARAG is especially well known as a legal expenses insurer and has high expertise in contractual matters. In disputes over claims settlement, you have a strong partner in ARAG. The online portal is functional but looks somewhat old-fashioned compared with insurtech interfaces such as Hepster's. Mobile management via the ARAG app is possible but less intuitive. Scoring (8/10): Very good support with branch advice and the legal expertise of a leading insurer. A slight deduction for the less modern online experience.
