About ottonova
ottonova Krankenversicherung AG was founded in Munich at the end of 2015 by Roman Rittweger, Sebastian Scheerer and Frank Birzle and received BaFin's permit to operate private health insurance in June 2017. Unlike many insurtechs, ottonova is therefore a risk carrier itself and is subject to German insurance supervision (BaFin is the German financial regulator). The company positions itself as Germany's first purely digital private health insurer: application, contract management, invoice submission and doctor's appointment service all run through the app and website. Besides comprehensive health insurance there are supplementary policies, including dental and hospital supplementary plans as well as company health insurance. There is no deposit protection (Einlagensicherung), as no bank deposits are taken.
