About kautel
kautel is a brand of cresult GmbH, based in Cologne (Cologne commercial register, HRB 111977), and has arranged rent deposit guarantees for private and commercial tenants since 2014. cresult GmbH is not an insurer itself but works as a registered insurance broker under section 34d of the Trade Regulation Act (GewO); the risk carrier, and therefore the guarantor on the deposit guarantee, is R+V Versicherung AG, which as a German insurer is supervised by BaFin (the German financial regulator). Instead of paying cash into a deposit account, tenants hand the landlord the guarantee certificate issued by R+V and pay an annual premium based on a percentage of the deposit amount. Deposit protection (Einlagensicherung) does not apply here because no balance is invested – the premiums are spent and are not refunded at the end of the contract. The model suits tenants who want to stay liquid when they move in and accept that the running costs over the tenancy can exceed the saving of an interest-bearing deposit account.
